Introduction
The Department of Consumer Protection and Government services is seeking a highly motivated 2nd Class Operating Engineer to work in the Central Powerhouse facility in downtown Winnipeg.

Conditions of Employment :
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must have a 2nd Class Power Engineering Certification Registered with the Province of Manitoba.
- Must have a valid Manitoba Class 5F driver’s licence.
- Must provide and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
- Must be physically capable of performing the required duties of this position such as medium / heavy lifting, climbing ladder / stairs, walking, crouching and kneeling, wearing all PPE required and be able to work in a restricted and / or confined space.
- Must be able to be on call, work alone, work outdoors and work with exposure to steam, chemicals, noise and dust.
Qualifications : Essential :
- Manitoba 2nd Class Power Engineering Certificate.
- Experience working in a First Class or Second Class Plant as Shift Engineer.
- Knowledge of the Workplace Health and Safety Act, and any other relevant safety policies and legislation.
- Interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while demonstrating initiative.
- Organizational and time management skills with the ability to plan and follow up.
Desired :
- Experience working with water treatment systems and life safety systems.
- Experience working with Building Management Systems.
Duties : Reporting to the Chief Power Engineer, the incumbent is responsible for the overall safe and efficient operation of a 1st Class High Pressure Heating Plant and all of its auxiliaries.
The incumbent will also supervise the operation of heating / cooling, water supply and electrical generating equipment, respond to fire alarms and observe and record all readings relating to energy consumption, steam and water pressures and cooling systems.
The incumbent will be required to complete chemical testing and adding of chemicals for the boiler, chilled water and cooling tower systems, test run emergency stand-by generators, fire booster pumps, as well as following regulations set out by the Department with regard to safe operations and inspections.
This position may provide guidance and ensure the quality of work of employees in less senior technical positions such as Assistant Operating Engineers and Maintenance Assistants.
