Competition 24-27R – Child and Youth Worker (Union Position) – Chapleau

What you’ll do in the role

  • Plan, participate and coordinate cultural, recreational, and social programming for the children and youth.
  • Provide children / youth with behavioral challenges opportunities to positively engage in pro-social activities,
  • Provide case management to youth in need of individual support such as crisis intervention, dispute resolution and other supportive intervention.
  • Monitor youth progress and cultural needs.
  • Provides information, referrals and follow-up services to children and youth.
  • Provide life skills support and goal planning, including educational and job readiness.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date case files according to specified timelines and provides written reports as requested.

What you bring to the table

  • Must have a Child and Youth Diploma, Social Services Diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience working within a social services context, preferably with Indigenous families.
  • Sound understanding of harm reduction, addictions, mental health, Indigenous healing practices and history, developmental issues and high-risk situations faced by children and / or youth.
  • Understanding systemic barriers faced by youth and the ability to advocate within these systems.
  • Knowledge of individual, family, child, adolescent, and group behavior.
  • Knowledge of local community agencies and other professional services available
  • Willingness and ability to support both traditional and contemporary healing practices and experience in collaborating with Elders, Healers, and contemporary helpers.
  • Must have experience in counselling, case management, file maintenance and statistical reporting.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and to elicit cooperation from others.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize a variety of competing and urgent demands.
  • Excellent intake assessment, crisis intervention, and advocacy skills.
  • Demonstrate excellent analytical, problem solving, negotiating, decision making, planning, organizational, administrative, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid G Ontario Driver’s licence, be willing to travel, able to work flexible hours.
  • Must produce clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • The ability to speak a native language is considered a major asset.
