Program Overview Childcare & Family, Pape Neighbourhood House

The position is responsible for program activity planning and delivery to meet the needs of children ages 6-12 years old.

The Children’s Program Worker works closely with the Manager and Assistant Supervisor to ensure the goals and objectives of the program are met.

This involves the planning and development of programs and services for children ages 6 to 12 within WoodGreen’s catchment area.

The philosophy of the work is in keeping with WoodGreen Community Services commitment to community development / empowerment and anti-racism principles.

What You Will Do

  • Engage in consultations with participating children and parents to determine the nature of After-School programming.
  • Plan and deliver After-School program activities which facilitate skills development, leadership, and high self-esteem for children in this age group, in response to participant input and goals.
  • Plan and supervise off-site trips with groups of children and is responsible for the safety of participants during these trips.
  • Develop and deliver community action activities for children in the After-School program.
  • Keep accurate attendance records, and maintain clear communication with parents regarding their child(ren)’s attendance.
  • Responsible for supervising children during scheduled extended hours before and after program times.
  • Document the process of program development, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Responsible for organizing and facilitating parent information.
  • Set and work toward personal skill development goals.
  • Participate in team development activities and program evaluation.
  • Participate in regular feedback sessions with other After-School program workers, and supervisory sessions with the Manager.
  • Ensure the organization's anti-racism objectives and community principles are achieved within the program.
  • Work in accordance with all relevant legislation, by-laws and WoodGreen organizational policies.

What You Bring to the Team

  • Completed or enrolled in a post-secondary education program.
  • First Aid Certification (First Aid / CPR-C).
  • 1 + years of experience planning and implementing activities for school-aged children.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct, instruct and care for school-aged children aged 6-12.

  • Knowledge of child development and learning needs of children aged 6-12.
  • Ability to work with children and parents who have experienced violence or homelessness, and some understanding of this population’s unique issues.
  • Understanding of community development and child-centred approaches.
  • Experience working with children with emotional or social challenges is an asset.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of community development and child-centred approaches.
  • Interests in music, arts or sports are an asset.
  • Familiarity with WoodGreen programs is an asset.
  • Health assessment including up-to-date immunization records and TB test.
  • Capable of fulfilling the physical and psychological requirements of the job as outlined in the attached Position Demands Analysis.
