Research Psychologist B Mental Health Outpatient (Research & Clinical)

This is a Clinical Research Psychologist position with our Mental Health inpatient and outpatient services at St. Paul’s Hospital, with a particular focus on schizophreniform disorders and / or substance use.

The ratio of research to clinical work is approximately 4 : 1.

Psychologist B - Heart Centre Program (Part-time, Permanent)

The Heart Center at St. Paul's Hospital, BC's referral center for cardiology, is looking to add a permanent, part-time Psychologist to their interdisciplinary team to help expand the mental health services available to patients with congenital heart disease.

This opportunity provides the opporunity to be part of a center widely recognized as being a leader in the understanding and treatment of heart disease, as well as a major teaching facility for cardiac professionals, while working alongside a team of physicians, nurses, and social workers with a wealth of clinical expertise.

Psychologist - Eating Disorders Discovery Day Mental Health Program (Part-Time, Permanent)

The Eating Disorders Program at St. Paul's Hospital is looking to add a permanent, part-time Psychologist to their interdisciplinary team specialized in supporting patients who are working toward nutritional, medical, and psychosocial recovery goals.

Qualifications / Skills and Education

Education, Training and Experience

Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from an accredited University, plus one year supervised internship. Two (2) years of recent, related experience including experience conducting or leading research activities in a clinical setting or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Registered with the College of Psychologists of British Columbia.

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of therapeutic, diagnostic and consultation techniques.
  • Knowledge of psychology assessment and treatment methods and tools.
  • Knowledge of evidence based psychological practice.
  • In depth knowledge with the concepts of a range of health research methodologies, including protocol development and implementation.
  • Ability to prepare and write grant applications to various funding bodies.
  • Ability to prepare study protocols and submit for Ethics Board approval.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements and appropriate conduct of research in human participants.
  • Proficiency in preparing scientific manuscripts and presentations.
  • Familiarity with provincial and national privacy and data sharing legislation for research purposes. Ability to function as a team member, leader and facilitator.
  • Ability to communicate with and deal effectively with co-workers, clients and their families, both one-on-one and in groups.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Ability to teach and provide clinical supervision.
  • Ability to establish workload priorities in collaboration with others.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to operate related equipment including personal computer and related word processing and spreadsheet software.

Duties and Responsibilities

1.Coordinates research activities for various programs within the designated program(s). Duties include identifying research opportunities, liaising with external agencies including the University of British Columbia, Department of Psychiatry and Psychology for Research, completing research applications, developing business case to show that research can be done and the benefits of the research and secures Program approval.

2.Presents and publishes original psychology research to experts in the relevant national and international community.

3.Oversees the day-to-day functioning of research activities through methods such as coordinating the activities of the research teams including establishing research teams, team schedules and guidelines.

4.Provides oversight to clinical research teams including research assistants through methods such as reviewing workload assignments and adjusting schedules according to workload.

Provides input to Program Director or the relevant Manager on research team member performance. Establishes priorities and provides guidance and clinical advice through methods such as facilitating resolutions to work issues and monitoring operations / clinical activities to ensure clinical standards are met and safety procedures are followed.

Forwards information on unresolved work issues to Program Director for action.

5.Trains research assistants through methods such as demonstration of how to complete literature searches.

6.Participates in the recruitment staff and / or clinical research team members through methods such as participating on interview panels, helping to identify needs, assisting with required paperwork, interviewing applicants and provide input to the Program Director or designate on the selection.

7.Participates in short and long-term planning for the designated Program through methods such as evaluating research activities, identifying opportunities for change and formulating recommendations for quality improvement to ensure optimal outcomes are met.

8.Provides a variety of administrative duties in support of the overall operating budget for the designated Research area by performing duties such as seeking research funding and reviewing, planning and administering expenditures within the research area against approved budgets to ensure adherence to projections and reports variances to the Program Director or designate.

9.Completes psychological assessments of referred clients through methods such as reviewing client history, gathering information from the referral source / client / other relevant persons, interviewing clients, conducting or supervising testing and developing / determining most effective methods of treatment to improve client health status.

10. Provides individual and group psychotherapy to clients within the designated Program including developing and implementing didactic and experiential group modules.

In programs such as Eating Disorders, provides meal support to clients.

11.Liaises with external agencies in the care of clients throughout the healthcare continuum by methods such as following up with outside agencies including education institutions, health care facilities and related agencies.

Organizes treatment plans, participates in case management and attends internal and external interdisciplinary meetings to ensure continuity of care of clients.

12.Attends clinical / case conferences as a member of an interdisciplinary team for client reviews, admissions and discharges.

Duties include providing input from a psychology perspective on a variety of care issues related to the client, and program effectiveness to ensure proper and effective treatment of the client.

13.Maintains client records through methods such as documenting client participation in the Program, most effective treatment, charting client information and psychological findings, preparing progress notes and psychological reports in accordance with established standards, and policies and procedures to meet regulatory requirements and document for future reference.

14.Provides formal and informal consultation to staff / community psychologists, other multidisciplinary team members of the hospital, other health care facilities, and students.

Duties include reviewing client / family needs or a specific client’s progress, problem solving and providing guidance / knowledge in the management of a client or client group and information regarding the appropriate usage of psychology assessment and testing tools to facilitate a conducive learning environment and ongoing staff development.

15.Provides clinical teaching and supervision to Residents, Post Doctoral Fellows and other applicable students from a psychological perspective by performing duties such as planning and organizing area assignment, monitoring clinical teaching and skill development, and providing evaluations to appropriate individuals to facilitate a conducive learning environment and professional expertise.

16.Maintains knowledge of current developments in Psychology Services, specifically as it relates to disorders in the program areas by methods such as reviewing literature, consulting with clinical and community experts, evaluating clinical practice and referral systems, and attending professional development activities to meet regulatory requirements of the College of Psychologists of British Columbia, recommend new practices, and contribute to improvement in care.

17.Attends a variety of meetings and rounds as a Program representative to provide input and / or receive information and participate in decision making.

18.Performs other related duties as assigned.
