AT VIA Rail Canada, our Maintenance Department, responsible for maintaining and inspecting our trains, is poised for an exciting future.
With a new fleet on the horizon, evolving workforce demographics, and multiple ongoing projects, our maintenance centers are undergoing significant transformations.
Reporting to the Senior Manager, the Supervisor of Maintenance and Mechanical Operations will oversee trades employees, general workers, and day-to-day operations of the Equipment Maintenance teams at the Vancouver Maintenance Centre.
As a frontline leader, the supervisor will drive change and guide their team through dynamic improvements using a continuous improvement approach, while promoting a safe and supportive work environment.
Candidates for this role must excel in planning, stakeholder management, communication, and leadership, demonstrating a track record of effectively resolving workplace issues.
The supervisor will play a crucial role in training and developing their team to align with the company's objectives. Emphasis will be placed on preventive maintenance and meeting internal clients' operational requirements, necessitating flexibility and agility to enhance team performance.
Responsibilities : MANAGING EMPLOYEES
MANAGING EMPLOYEES
- Directs a team of unionized employees;
- Exhibit a soft skills coaching approach by being present on the shop floor to support and mobilize the team;
- Coordinate employee tasks and oversee progress during daily maintenance activities in partnership with the Lead Hand;
- Supervise the onboarding process (or departmental transition) and ensure that employees thoroughly understand the work environment, practices, tools, and health and safety regulations;
- Participate in the investigation process in accordance with the collective agreement;
- Deliver timely information, share best practices, address operational concerns, and communicate company updates to foster transparency, clarify company direction and expectations, and create an engaging environment;
- Maintain a healthy work environment, foster a positive culture, promote employee engagement, and nurture constructive labor relations with the union and various partners.
PROMOTING HEALTH AND SAFETY :
- Consistently enforce health and safety regulations and promote a workplace focused on health and safety;
- Ensure that all employees have completed their mandatory safety training;
- Enhance safety compliance and achieve better safety outcomes through regular safety observations. Provide feedback, reward employees for safe performance, and address non-compliant behavior;
- Effectively oversee and foster a work environment that prevents losses in various aspects such as occupational safety and health, overtime, absenteeism, productivity, corporate assets, material waste, and environmental compliance.
CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT :
- Track performance goals and suggest enhancements to existing methods and programs to boost productivity and operational efficiency;
- Maintain positive collaborative relationships among staff, contractors, and internal clients by promptly addressing issues as they arise;
- Oversee accurate and timely reporting of delays, identify root causes, and propose improvements.
OVERSEEING EFFICIENCY & QUALITY OF WORKMANSHIP :
- Direct maintenance operations and guide the team in implementing a proactive maintenance strategy focused on executing planned and scheduled work;
- Responsible for managing the budget within his area, including expenditures on manpower, overtime, and materials;
- Guarantee train availability and reliability by optimizing team efficiency and maintaining high work quality;
- Ensure adherence to company policies and uphold Maintenance Centre quality standards in work execution. Requirements :
- College diploma (DEC) or equivalent combination of technical studies and work experience (mechanical, electrical);
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in managing multidisciplinary teams in a unionized environment;
- Familiar with Transport Canada Railway regulations (asset);
- Strong communication skills in English, both verbal and written (French is an asset);
- Open to travel as needed to support operations at Mission;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite.
The Supervisor, must be available to work on various shifts according to operational needs.
