Position Summary
As a project-based position, the Safety Coordinator plays a critical role in ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for all employees.
The safety Coordinator is responsible for implementing and providing on-site direction on the company’s Health and Safety programs and policies in compliance with legislative Health and Safety requirements.
This position will be instrumental in promoting a culture of safety and proactive risk management.
This position comes with the requirement for out-of-town work at one of our satellite or project offices. There may be an option of travelling in and out on a rotational basis depending on the project.
Responsibilities
- Coordinates and administers an effective health and safety program and provides advice and guidance to the Project Team on Health and safety issues and topics
- Performs general administrative and recordkeeping functions and procedures including reviewing subcontractor's safety programs;
maintaining inventory for all hazardous products, first aid and personal protective equipment used on site; reporting and tracking incidents & near misses, and maintaining and filing confidential information
- Creates clear and timely Flash Reports and participates in detailed, fact-based incident investigations and management
- Implements client and IDL Health and Safety Programs under the coaching of the H&S Manager
- Participates in project safety meetings
- Provides safety material for daily Tool Box meetings and is able to lead Tool Box and Safety meetings
- Engages in the development and enhancement of Safe Work Practices and Job Hazard Assessments
- Acquires basic knowledge of site safety programs, emergency response, fire control systems and personal protective equipment and is able to convey these to project team members & contractors
- Conducts facility inspections and safety audits regularly to monitor safe work practices and procedures
- Prepares inspection reports and ensures corrective action is taken when deficiencies are identified
- Collaborates with the Project Manager and Safety Manager to ensure health and safety programs meet legislative compliance
- Keeps abreast of current and new health and safety laws and regulations, ensuring the company complies with these laws.
- Works with management and staff to develop safety solutions and improvements.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in a safety coordinator role or similar
- Industrial Construction industry experience is preferred
- Accreditation as a National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) or Construction Safety Officer (CSO)
- Related post-secondary Health & Safety degrees, diplomas and certifications are an asset
- Strong understanding of legal health and safety guidelines.
- Effective communication skills and ability to interact with key stakeholders in verbal, written and electronic form
- Ability to handle multiple projects and priorities
- Strong understanding of legal health and safety guidelines
- Strong computer expertise including experience with MS Word and Excel
