Speech Language Pathologists require :

knowledge of speech-language pathology theory, intervention strategies and practices

the ability to deliver service to communicatively impaired students in a manner which recognizes and reflects a range of service delivery models

possession of strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, parents, teachers, administrators, other professionals and support workers

the ability to work independently and establish priorities for service to several schools in highly demanding situations

knowledge and a commitment to a consultative, collaborative process in working with school teams, parents and other relevant people

The primary goal of the speech-language services program is to support students with communication challenges by :

coordinating their Speech-Language Services with the teams in their assigned schools

identifying, assessing and evaluating children suspected of significant communicative challenges

planning, developing, providing and / or directing appropriate and effective intervention programs

providing on-going monitoring of children with communicative disorders through informal and formal assessments, and providing suggestions for management both at home and in the classroom

collaborating with school teams to support language goals connect to curriculum (e.g. team teaching, I.E.P. accommodations)

communicating with parents to discuss their child’s progress and methods in creating an atmosphere conducive to enhanced communication

acting as supportive personnel and counsel for school teams to better understand the needs of the children who are identified as communicatively disadvantaged

providing current schedules and caseloads of identified students receiving speech- language services to school teams and the Director of Instruction

performing those recording and reporting tasks necessary to maintain effective communication with all involved in the child's program

initiating referrals, when necessary, to other district staff, agencies and community professionals in collaboration with the school teams

MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology or equivalent academic training and experience

must be registered with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC

eligibility for membership in Speech and Hearing BC and / or Speech-Language and Audiology Canada (SAC)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

Experience in speech-language pathology in public schools preferred but not required.

A valid B.C. Teaching Certificate may be an asset.)

REPORTING STRUCTURE

The personnel in this position are accountable in the execution of their assigned duties to a Director of Instruction.

term assignments have the ability of becoming continuing assignments within the district

as per the collective agreement, annual SLP College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals fees are reimbursed annually

participation in professional development activities on scheduled district Pro-D days

opportunities to work within a variety of clinical frameworks (ex. consultation, paper-based or digital assessments, direct therapy etc.)

medical and dental benefits are available

benefits associated with membership in the BCTF including the BCTF pension plan

this position is eligible for the BC Student Loan Forgiveness Program

The starting annual salary for this position ranges from $57,972 to $106,217, with placement on the range based on length of service

and qualifications in accordance with the collective agreement. Pay will be calculated in the range and according to FTE.
