Associate Real Estate Lawyer

Doormat
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Full-time

About Doormat

Join a fast growing startup as one of our earliest hires! Doormat is on a mission to make real estate law simple and we need your help to do it.

While a real estate lawyer is required for the large majority of real estate transactions in Canada, the process has seen very little innovation, leaving a client experience that doesn’t match today's consumer expectations.

We provide real estate legal services from end-to-end, leveraging a proprietary digital solution that brings transparency and simplicity, and an experienced legal team.

About the role

As an Associate Real Estate Lawyer at Doormat, you will be responsible for overseeing residential real estate transactions all the way from initial onboarding through to close.

Your primary objective will be to deliver the legal expertise and insight required to facilitate property purchases, sales, and refinances.

In partnership with other members of our client-facing team, you will deliver a top-tier client experience that is the perfect combination of transparent, efficient, and caring.

Your key areas of impact will include :

  • Legal advisory : provide legal expertise and execution on assigned matters, including but not limited to, key document review, liaising with third parties, and advising clients.
  • Matter oversight : work with Client Success Managers (CSMs) to ensure that transactions are on track and our responsibilities are fulfilled.
  • Client support : provide guidance, support, and advice to our clients for all legal inquiries they have.
  • Product insight : inform product development and enhancements that will make the Doormat experience even better for both our clients and our team.

While the above will be your key areas of responsibility, we’re a small team and everyone plays a role in the day-to-day running of the business.

You’ll have the opportunity to get involved in projects outside the scope of a traditional real estate lawyer that will contribute to our ambitious company goals.

We need someone who can jump in to support where needed, even if it’s not expressly outlined in the job description.

You’re a perfect fit for the role if you are :

  • Experienced in real estate law : 1-3 years as a Law Society of Ontario licensee, in good standing, and have demonstrated experience in real estate law.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity : we’re a startup so every person on the team wears many hats. There often won’t be a clear path forward and you are ok with that.
  • An excellent communicator : your verbal and written communication skills are top notch. You love working with people and don’t shy away from challenging conversations.
  • Organized with an attention to detail : you can juggle multiple priorities with ease. You are able to prioritize between competing objectives.

You self-manage to make sure the right things are getting done, at the right time.

  • A problem solver : when problems arise, you thrive. You tackle challenges head-on and without hesitation.
  • Driven and entrepreneurial mindset : you act like an owner (because you are!). You take ownership of your work and do what needs to be done, without ego.

It would be a bonus if you have :

  • Existing relationships with real estate and mortgage brokerages;
  • Worked at a startup before;
  • Client service and / or sales experience;
  • Experience working with software tools such as GSuite, Slack and Front.

What else should you know?

Start date : December 2024

Location : Hybrid (work from home and Toronto office)

Perks :

  • The opportunity to be an early stage employee at a venture-backed startup
  • Competitive salary
  • Employee stock option plan (ESOP)
  • Benefits

Interviewing at Doormat :

  • First interview : 30 minutes with Joel Fox
  • Second interview : 45 minutes with Ben Berry and Ed Carmichael
  • Third interview : 30 minutes with two other members of the Doormat team
