Purpose of Role
The Great Bear project is a development-stage asset located in the renowned and prolific Red Lake mining district and represents one of the most exciting recent gold discoveries globally.
The project has excellent potential to become a top-tier deposit that could support a large, long-life mine complex. Kinross’ comprehensive exploration and development program will aim to support the vision of a quality, high-grade, open-pit mine and a longer-term, sizeable underground mine.
Currently the Great Bear project is working through engineering studies as well as working on the development of an Advanced Exploration Project (AEX).
Job Responsibilities
The analyst intern will support current business needs, which may vary over the course of the internship. A successful intern should be flexible and eager to take on new and different tasks to support the business and expand their learning opportunities.
The following is a list of areas where the Great Bear Project commonly needs support.
The analyst intern will be a part of the Great Bear Project Management Team based on Toronto. This is a fully integrated team of 30 people in various disciplines and specialties helping to deliver the Great Bear project.
Work embedded in the Great Bear Projects team in completing the PEA, Pre-feasibility, or Feasibility studies :
- Lead the development of project-specific business cases, helping to drive scope, schedule or procurement decisions within the project.
- Provide analytical support and input into the assumptions used in project studies (e.g., mine opex, processing opex etc.)
- Work closely with the projects team in developing and finalizing inputs for select sections of the studies.
- Perform trade-offs for various technologies, infrastructure, and design optimization (haul road routing, fleet selection, haul truck sizing, automation, energy efficiency, etc.).
- Support the commercial and procurement team with invoicing, project forecasting, adhoc cost analysis and various other requests as they arise.
Support ongoing project field programs (soils Geotech drilling, bedrock geotechnical drilling, geophysics, metallurgy)
Provide coordination support to ongoing field programs to help advance project engineering. Including daily tracking, weekly planning, monthly tracking and field support.
Forecast the look ahead plan including cost tracking and schedule to hit project timelines.
Plan for various site visits during the year to help support the field team in the program execution.
Support performance improvement projects in the assessment and / or implementation phases :
- Collect and analyze data, summarizing findings in a structured format
- Monitor and report on progress of implementation action plans
- Participate in the development of communication materials to share progress and challenges with site and corporate management as required.
- Think creatively, thinking with a solution-oriented mindset on how to add value to the business case.
- Perform internal and external benchmarking exercises to validate the reasonability of the assumptions.
Support the Advanced Exploration Project (AEX) working to start construction in 2024 pending permitting :
- Adhoc analysis to help maintain construction schedule, accommodation strategy, trade-offs on various purchasing or project design decisions that need to be made.
- Ability to travel to site to support pieces of the AEX construction during the busy field season.
Minimum Requirements
Education and Experience
- 2nd or 3rd year Engineering student in any engineering background
- Strong analytical capabilities and experience in Excel
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral; experience in PowerPoint is an asset
- Excellent attention to detail
- Proven ability to collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Team player with an ability to work effectively in a team setting, as well as independently
- Strong time management skills and the ability to multi-task
- Experience working at a mine site or in a engineering project setting is an asset
- Ability and willingness to travel to the Great Bear site for up to 1 week at a time
