Duties

Community Health Nurses deliver comprehensive nursing services to First Nations communities. They provide in-depth nursing knowledge, skills, and clinical expertise through consultation and clinical practice, while also facilitating knowledge transfer through health promotion.

The three streams that fall under “Community Health” are Public Health, Home & Community Care and the Float Team.

Public Health responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

  • Disease and injury prevention
  • Communicable disease control
  • Well child clinics
  • Pre-natal and post-natal programs
  • School health
  • Health promotion

Home & Community Care responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

  • Case management
  • Chronic disease management
  • Wound care
  • Post-operative care (in client homes).
  • Float Team nurses enjoy autonomous, varied work travelling to many of the Alberta First Nation Communities. Float Team Nurses will be required to travel to any of the following communities on a regular basis :

  • Alexis
  • Duncan
  • Goodfish Lake
  • Heart Lake
  • Paul Band
  • Saddle Lake
  • Sunchild
  • Sturgeon Lake
  • Work environment

    First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB), Indigenous Services Canada, is recruiting Registered Nurses to provide quality, evidence-informed nursing services, respectful of culture and intended to enhance the health of First Nations people in Alberta. The maintenance of cultural competence and the provision of culturally safe care are paramount in these areas of practice.

    Community Health Nurses enjoy both autonomous and team-based work in the various communities across Alberta located in Treaty 6 and 7.

    Please note : Float Team Nurses will travel to the First Nation Communities identified under “Duties”

    Selected candidates must reside in, or be willing to relocate to Alberta at the time of appointment. Relocation benefits are available.

    Intent of the process

    The immediate need is to fill 2 Home Care positions (Alexis and Saddle Lake), 5 Public Health positions (Saddle Lake and Sunchild) and staff a Float Team based out of Enoch.

    A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff identical or similar positions at this group and level with various conditions of employment, tenures and in various locations within Alberta.

    Occupational Certification :

    Eligibility for registration as a Registered Nurse in a province or territory of Canada

    Experience :

    Experience as a Registered Nurse (RN) providing nursing services in one or more of the following areas :

    1. Public Health or Community Health

    2. Primary Care

    3. Urgent or Emergency Care

    4. Diversified Acute or Intensive Care

    If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

    Experience :

  • Graduation with a degree in nursing from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • Experience with immunizations such as mass clinics (seasonal influenza, COVID-19), school or well-child clinics
  • Experience in the treatment and management of Sexually Transmitted Blood Borne Infections
  • Experience with maternal-child development, post-partum or newborn assessments
  • Experience in pediatric nursing
  • Experience in infection control and prevention or Communicable Disease Control
  • Experience in Chronic Disease Management
  • Experience with mental health programs or in providing mental health services
  • Experience in palliative care nursing
  • Experience working in outpost or remote settings
  • Experience working with Indigenous people or organizations

    Possession of a valid driver’s license

    Current BLS certificate, renewed annually

    Continuous professional registration, without conditions or restrictions, with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta
