We are seeking a creative, dynamic, committed professional to join our team : Human Rights and Equity Advisor (HREA)$133,857 to $157,626 per annumEight (8) Month Contract Reporting to the Director of Education, the Human Rights and Equity Adviser (HREA) will work alongside senior system leaders to proactively address human rights concerns and foster cultures of respect for human rights and equity.

The HREA’s key responsibilities include a) supporting the district’s efforts to identify and address systemically-based human rights and equity issues and build capacity to ensure compliance with the Ontario Human Rights Code, through leadership, education and training, relationship-building, and participating in system-level decision-making, and b) overseeing the OCDSB’s internal human rights complaint procedure, including conducting investigations.

  • Qualifications A post-secondary degree in a related discipline such as law, human rights and equity, humanities, social sciences and a minimum of three years direct experience in human rights and equity, developing human rights related policies and procedures and managing human rights complaints, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Superior knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Human Rights Code and human rights case law, and emerging issues and trends;

Knowledge and understanding of the Education Act, associated regulations and legislation. Qualifications to practice law in Ontario is considered an asset.

  • Ability to apply human rights law and analyze issues using the Code and relevant policies and procedures to prevent and address discrimination and harassment;
  • Ability to manage in a complex and diverse environment; Strong written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills and problem-solving An inclusive approach to building consensus and solving problems;

Experience handling contentious issues with sensitivity, confidentiality, tact and discretion; Strong cultural competence and demonstrated commitment to working in a diverse school community and / or work environment Ability to manage a large caseload, prioritize and organize work effectively, manage multiple priorities and deadlines, and maintain detailed records in a fast-paced environment.
