Job description

Job Title : Substation Engineer

Location of Services : Fully Remote (Candidates located in BC, or willing to relocate to BC, are preferred)

Contract Duration : 12 months

Hours : 37.5 hours per week

Max T4 Rate : $101.47 / hour

Max INC Rate : $122.78 / hour

General Description :

The Substation Engineer is a professional engineer who applies their engineering expertise to deliver innovative solutions, estimating, planning, and quality management services for medium to high complexity projects. This role ensures that projects are executed safely, within budget, and on time, while meeting quality standards.

Experience and Role Accountabilities :

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a relevant engineering field or equivalent.
  • Develop safe engineering solutions by using initiative and judgment to develop designs, analyze problems, and interpret engineering specifications on medium to highly complex assignments.
  • Ensure safety, cost, quality, and time objectives are met by proposing changes in plans, estimating costs, recommending payments for work completed, preparing progress reports, and coordinating work schedules.
  • Resolve highly technical design and field engineering problems through independent studies and analysis, making recommendations for safe engineering designs.
  • Participate in engineering practice by conducting independent studies and analysis, contributing to the development of technical standards, and providing guidance and advice to other engineering professionals.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service through communication with stakeholders, defining engineering services, establishing design criteria, and reporting on work progress.
  • Make complex decisions on technical matters including design bases, criteria, and concepts, as well as the management of engineering resources and activities.

Education and Skills :

  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) eligible for registration with Engineers & Geoscientists BC or equivalent jurisdiction.
  • Familiarity with CAD systems and drawing standards.
  • Ability to use standard industry design / analysis software.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Intermediate English skills for professional communication, both written and spoken.
  • Additional Experience and Role Accountabilities :

  • Experience with the design of electrical utility generation systems and working with utility design solutions in an electric utility environment.
  • Prepare project documentation and deliverables, including evaluation reports, specifications, proposals, estimates, design bases, calculations, hazard logs, and test plans.
  • Prepare design work packages, including scope, duration, and effort estimates.
  • Prepare signed / sealed engineering deliverables in accordance with industry standards and regulatory practices.
  • Provide technical assistance and construction support in the field, conducting field reviews as required.
  • Design electrical systems and equipment for generation stations in accordance with industry standards and practices.
  • Perform engineering calculations, including grounding studies, arc flash studies, short-circuit analysis, and cable design.
  • Additional Education and Skills :

  • Ability to provide technical direction to junior engineers.
  • Ability to manage design tasks, including scope, schedule, and cost.
  • Strong communication skills, including verbal and technical writing abilities.
  • Experience in project management, including estimating, cost control, and administration.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects, plan resources, and manage project deliverables.
  • Ability to prepare technical specifications for tendering, evaluate tenders, and make recommendations for awards.
  • Must Haves :

  • Solid knowledge of medium voltage diesel stations and associated substation construction, maintenance, and operational activities, with flexible design capabilities for integration with renewables, battery energy storage, and microgrid controllers.
  • Provide existing diesel station and substation electrical details to internal staff and subcontractors for design integration into a microgrid.
  • Participate in design review meetings on a weekly basis, representing Non-Integrated Areas.
  • Respond to information requests from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Review electrical and control design packages submitted by subcontractors to ensure compliance with relevant standards. Design packages may include single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC / DC schematics, panel layouts, and Protection & Control philosophy documents.

  • Experience with HMI / PLC systems.
