Pickford & Black

Pickford and Black is a high-volume restaurant located on the waterfront of downtown Halifax. Our Kitchen team strives to use the best of what the Maritimes has to offer to create a delicious menu that incorporates not only amazing fresh seafood, but also farm-fresh local produce, meats, and poultry.

The Assistant Manager will work under the direction of the General Manager and with the front-of-house management team taking an active role in all aspects of restaurant operations, including staffing, scheduling, cost controls, staff training, and administration. The Assistant Manager will be responsible for overseeing team members and taking an active role during daily service, consistently providing quality service to our guests.

As General Manager, You Will

  • Oversee all aspects of restaurant operations, including front and back-of-house operations. The General Manager must demonstrate outstanding leadership, managing, mentoring, and motivating the Pickford & Black team.
  • Oversee the successful running of the restaurant, working to achieve the financial, marketing, and human resources goals and objectives as set by Pickford & Black and Murphy Hospitality Group.
  • Oversee all restaurant financials such as labour costs, cost of goods sold, and costing team schedules.
  • Demonstrate and communicate the Pickford & Black vision to all team members and lead by example.
  • Work with the MHG People Team to conduct all team member hiring and proper training; experience in recruiting and hiring is an asset.
  • Ensure team members provide a memorable guest experience through coaching and fostering a positive working culture by reinforcing the MHG values daily, exciting team members with their positive nature.
  • Encourage a culture that revolves around memorable guest experiences, summer fun, and quality food.
  • Work with the restaurant management team to ensure successful restaurant operations, developing workloads, providing mentorship and coaching.
  • Work with the Head Chef and their team to ensure food menu standards are met as set out by the Pickford & Black team and MHG Chief Restaurant Officer.
  • Aid in restaurant menu development.
  • Guest and team member management through conflict resolution and problem-solving, building and maintaining authentic relationships with guests and team members.
  • Perform all front-of-house duties as needed, including hosting, bartending, serving, and expediting.

  • What You Bring

  • A post-secondary diploma / degree in business or hospitality is an asset.
  • 3+ years experience working as a General Manager in a full-service restaurant.
