Job Description
Summary
Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Licensed Practical Nurse, Operating Room, provides practical nursing services in an operating room environment as a member of an integrated surgical team performing varied and complex surgical interventions.
Consults, confers, and collaborates with other members of the surgical team in facilitating safe and effective surgical interventions through the performance of scrubbing and / or circulating duties.
This includes pre-operative, operative, and post-operative activities such as assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting patient care, and providing support to patients and their families in accordance with the BCCNM standards of practice and consistent with the mission, vision and values of Providence Health Care (PHC) and established protocols.
Qualifications / Skills and Education
Education
Graduation from a recognized program for Practical Nurses with the full range of current licensed practical nursing competencies, and graduation from an accredited O.
R. Program for Licensed Practical Nurses plus one (1) year recent related experience working as a Licensed Practical Nurse in acute care, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing LPN registrant. Current basic cardiac life support certification.

Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedures appropriate for the area of service.

Duties and Responsibilities
Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents patient care during the pre-operative, operative and immediate post-operative periods.
Performs admission duties by methods such as assessing individual patient needs and planning nursing care for the patient in collaboration with the RN, and other members of the perioperative team prior to the patient transferring to the Operating Room.
Performs scrubbing duties by methods such as working directly with the Surgeon within the sterile field, passing instruments, sponges and other items during the surgical procedure, and collaborating with the RN as well as other members of the perioperative team as required.
Performs circulating duties by methods such as assisting the primary circulating nurse as required in accordance within established standards and protocols, and collaborating with other members of the perioperative team as required.
Alerts the RN to any problems, changes or unusual signs or symptoms of the patient while in the operating room setting.
Documents observations, treatment and other patient care activities during the pre, intra and post-operative periods by methods such as recording observations and / or information onto patient record.
Attends a variety of meetings such as staff meetings and quality improvement rounds to provide and obtain information and feedback about patients and patient care.
Assists with orientation of new staff by methods such as demonstrating work procedures.
Attends educational sessions, in-services and workshops as required to facilitate knowledge enhancement and technology changes.
Performs related clerical duties by methods such as answering the telephone, taking and relaying messages and assisting in maintaining standardized records.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
