Job description

As a Senior Process Engineer within Irving Oil’s Engineering Services team, you will be supporting the largest oil refinery in Canada and our terminal network. You will work with engineers, and cross-functional teams to investigate, design and execute capital and expense projects and optimize the process units within our operations. As the owner of various initiatives, you will work with the team from conception to completion in support of projects. Your success in this senior level engineering position will rely on your experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals unsupervised while providing mentorship and guidance to less experienced team members.

Your Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering and design efforts on complex, multi-discipline capital / expense projects.
  • Check and approve work and provide working supervision, guidance, and assistance to team members.
  • Develop and implement plans for problem solving and complex design completion, as well as other improvement initiatives.
  • Perform quality management and routine procedure reviews.
  • Keep cross-functional leaders informed of project progress and status updates.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of the whole discipline team and Engineering Services department at a leadership level, identifying opportunities, and coordinating resources to implement those improvements.
  • Collaborate on project work and studies with 3rd party consultants, technology licensors and engineering contractors.
  • Remain current on emerging refining technologies.
  • Perform heat and material balance and process simulations, hydraulic calculations, preparation of equipment / instrument datasheets and line lists, process design basis, management of PFDs and P&IDs, development of operating guidelines, etc.
  • Your Skills

  • Proficient process engineer on brownfield capital projects.
  • Strong technical report writing and presentation / communication skills.
  • Well organized, and able to assign and direct process engineering activities on multiple projects being developed in parallel, while retaining focus on project cost and schedule commitments, cross-discipline dependencies, field requirements, relevant codes and standards, and stakeholder requirements.
  • Demonstrated skills to work collaboratively with others both in own team and cross-functional teams.
  • Able to communicate disagreements in design and constructively influence required changes across engineering disciplines.
  • Excellent understanding of oil refinery operations and associated economic drivers.
  • Strong understanding of applicable regulatory and industry codes, e.g. ASME, API, NFPA, CSA.
  • Proficiency with Process Hazard / Risk Assessment methods including What-If, HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA is essential.
  • Proficiency with the following process engineering software tools – Aspen HYSYS, EDR or HTRI, AFT Fathom / Arrow. Experience in MySep and Salus would be considered an asset.
  • The work will require periodic visits to our operating facilities. You must be able to work in the field and wear full PPE as required by safety standards.
  • Your Experience

  • University degree in Chemical Engineering with P.Eng designation (or immediate eligibility) in New Brunswick is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in process design in chemical, petrochemical or oil & gas plants.
