Senior Geologist, Mineral Resources – Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator's (AER's) mandate has expanded to include new areas of resource development, including minerals. This expansion is part of the Alberta government's economic recovery plan to diversify the economy and accelerate growth in new and emerging sectors. As the Senior Geologist, Mineral Resources, you will join the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) branch’s Emerging Resources team, which is a technically and culturally diverse group of geoscience professionals engaged in mineral and geothermal resource evaluation. The team is split across Edmonton and Calgary and enjoys a very flexible mix of remote and in-person working styles.
You will lead mineral resource characterization at the Alberta Geology Survey (AGS) and will act as the primary steward of mineral resource information in Alberta. You will require a broad range of functional knowledge and experience related to mineral resources and familiarity with the various geological settings and mineral resource types in Alberta. You will require advanced knowledge of mineral systems, occurrences, associations, and economic geology to develop and lead the implementation of a mineral program strategy, organize and conduct field programs, propose, design and lead projects, mentor staff, and provide support for regulatory decision making related to minerals. You should have advanced knowledge of integrating a wide variety of data types from different sources in digital workspaces to generate geospatial geoscience products for mineral systems analysis, applying innovative and best-practice methods when warranted.
What your day-to-day will look like :
- Influence the development of a mineral program strategy by proposing projects that deliver impactful public geoscience information. Provide scientific advice, advanced technical guidance, and leadership on branch and / or organizational projects, and leverage experience to understand the impact of projects on various stakeholders.
- Develop, lead, and ensure the technical excellence of potentially multi-year projects designed to characterize mineral systems and mineral resources of Alberta through collection, quality control, integration, interpretation, and publication of diverse datasets, and initiate collaboration with internal staff and external stakeholders. Within projects being lead, allocate work to other staff and provide technical guidance.
- Develop reports, maps, journal articles, and conference presentations for public consumption. Attend courses and conferences to maintain technical competency and showcase AGS project work.
- Plan and lead field mapping projects throughout Alberta.
- Maintain current state of knowledge, best-practice methodologies, and awareness of minerals industry activity and related geoscience research and communicate relevant information to AGS Leadership Team via seminars / working sessions with other branches, or with external stakeholder groups.
- Mentor junior staff, lead minerals-focused knowledge sharing initiatives.
- Actively manage data acquired or produced during AGS project work to ensure data and information is stored and described according to best-practice standards and is handled and protected after projects are complete. Act as a data steward for datasets pertaining to their area of expertise to confirm data added to AGS data-holdings adhere to an agreed upon format and design structure.
- Provide support for regulatory activities related to minerals.
What we’re looking for in you :
Bachelor’s degree in geology or other related education, with preference for advanced degrees.7-10 years of relevant professional experience, regulatory experience, or combination of education and experience will be considered.Eligibility for APEGA membership is required.Experience integrating field, lab, geophysical (airborne gravity and magnetic, downhole wireline, hyperspectral core scans), and remote sensing data - in 2 and 3 dimensions - to characterize mineral systems and deposits. Proficiency in data manipulation, visualization mapping and modelling.Strong understanding of mineral systems, occurrences, associations, alterations, and tectonic settings, particularly for the types of mineral deposits potentially occurring in Alberta.Competence in igneous and metamorphic petrology, geochemistry, geochronology and structural geology.Fieldwork planning and mapping experience and understanding of Alberta mineral resources : past – present – prospective.Additional Information :
All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.Pre-placement medical required.A fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving record is required.Additional safety training will be provided as necessary, e.g., standard first aid, wilderness first aid, animal awareness, H2S Alive, etc.Expect to spend 1-3 weeks each summer in the field, potentially in very remote areas of Alberta.
