Job description

Job Summary

The Excavator / Hoe Operator is responsible for working with ground personnel during the excavation and installation process to ensure that excavation is at the proper depth / grade.

Main Responsibilities

  • Work with ground personnel in the excavation and installation process of laying pipe on line and grade.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of a large excavator.
  • Ensure trench is excavated to the proper depth / grade.
  • Responsible for placement of water, storm and sanitary sewer pipe in the excavation.
  • Ensure all work is conducted in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Follow directions of ground crew regarding craning, gravel placement, and grading.
  • Ability to cut grade with minimal time spent on excavating to ensure production is on schedule.
  • Be aware of changes in soil conditions and materials that impact operations.
  • Conduct trench work so that it meets OH&S requirements.
  • Bring to Foreman’s attention any irregularities in soil conditions or materials being used.
  • Be aware of proper rigging of pipe, manhole barrels, etc., and ensure safe work procedures are followed during lowering of materials into the excavation.
  • Act in a courteous manner in order to project a positive company image.
  • Be observant of the condition of equipment and materials used to ensure company standards are met and promptly report any possible problems or defects.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Certifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 (or better) driver’s license with clean drivers abstract.
  • Own transportation.
  • Work Experience

  • Minimum 3-5 years in the road construction industry.
  • Technical Skills

  • Must be able to perform heavy manual labour under adverse weather conditions.
  • Familiarity with the materials, tools and machinery used.
  • Knowledge of the road construction industry.
  • Must be able to meet all safety requirements and applicable safety policies.
  • Must be able to communicate well with co-workers.
  • Most be able to work under pressure.
  • Ability to work cooperatively independently and with a team in a fast-paced and complex environment.

  • Overtime as required.
  • Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust, grease, fumes, odors, oil, asphalt, and toxic and flammable substances.
  • The ability to stand, crouch, and kneel for extended periods of time.
  • Required to perform tasks that involve heavy lifting, bending, crouching, and kneeling.
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs regularly.
  • Use of personal protection equipment is required.
  • Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear required when working outdoors.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in areas that are dusty and / or dirty.
  • Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol policy, including testing requirements.
  • Must comply with all company policies.
