What can you expect in this role?

Reporting to the Manager – Climate Change, Corporate Actuarial, the successful candidate will be responsible for Risk Management activities relating to modelling climate perils and the physical impact of climate change on our insurance portfolio.

Your Responsibilities

  • Support climate change initiatives such as monitoring and researching impacts of various perils on business operations.
  • Assist with the strategic goals of the company such as limiting catastrophe risk.
  • Research a climate peril and understand climate change impacts in the context of the insurance industry.
  • Investigate and gather data relevant to the analysis of a climate peril.
  • Analyze and interpret geospatial and climate data using programming and spatial analysis tools.
  • Build and test climate hazard impact models.
  • Communicate results to team and leaders through presentations and reports.
  • Work collaboratively with other Actuarial teams such as Reserving, Planning, Pricing, and Analytics to solve complex problems, and provide recommendations to management.

What do you bring to the role?

  • Currently enrolled in the 3 rd year or above of a full-time university program in natural science or engineering (ex., Actuarial Science, Climate Science, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Earth Science, Geography, or Physics).
  • Experience, through a previous co-op or research, in quantitative analysis and modeling of climate hazards such as flood, wildfire, or storms is important.
  • Strong programming and software skills, including proficiency in a programming language such as Python (with libraries pandas, NumPy, SciPy, Scikit-learn).
  • Experience with geographical information system software for spatial analysis and data visualization (ex. ArcGIS, QGIS).
  • Ability to collect, clean, process, analyze, and manage large datasets (climate data, socioeconomic data, etc.).
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Team player, adaptable to a changing and fast-paced environment, and having a keen sense of responsibility.

  • The hourly compensation for the role starts at $22 / h and will increase based on factors including but not limited to, skills, education, experience, and the recommended rates as set by the respective educational institution.
