About the Role :

The Legal Counsel provides legal services to the University community on a wide range of legal matters with significant complexity and risk exposure, spanning corporate / commercial law, data / privacy, regulatory compliance, and general academic matters. The Legal Counsel supports critical institutional initiatives and functions through the provision of expert advice, contract drafting, negotiation, and review, legal research, policy development, and general advocacy. The role also plays a key role in supporting the University’s legislative compliance efforts.

The Legal Counsel will :

  • Provide legal advice to the University community across a wide range of legal matters with significant complexity and risk exposure, including procurement, commercial leasing, academic partnerships, and legislative compliance;
  • Independently consult with partners and draft, review, amend, negotiate, and advise on various legal and quasi-legal documents;
  • Develop the legal strategy for dispute resolution and provide litigation support to external counsel;
  • Develop web-based information, publications, and tools to facilitate understanding of and compliance with laws and University policies;
  • Provide relevant and timely education and training to faculty members, staff, and students on legal and compliance issues;
  • Conduct research and analysis on relevant legislative and regulatory obligations affecting university operations;
  • Monitor developments in legislation and regulations, providing guidance on their implications for university activities;
  • Identify compliance risks and develop mechanisms for detection, reporting, and remediation of non-compliance;
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify legal risks and recommend strategies to mitigate potential liabilities.

Key Skills and Experience :

  • A relevant undergraduate degree and a Bachelor of Law or a Juris Doctor, or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • A member in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada;
  • Experience in legal practice, with expertise in a related field (e.g., commercial law, administrative law, post-secondary education sector);
  • Knowledge of appropriate legislation and case law, including contract law, commercial leasing, intellectual property law, human rights law and administrative law;
  • Ability to develop creative solutions and provide effective legal advice across a wide range of legal matters with significant complexity and risk exposure;
  • Solid computer competency including word processing, spreadsheet, database, web applications and web maintenance, social media, and internet search engines;
  • Promotes and embodies inclusiveness and respect within the workplace and the broader community;
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with people from different backgrounds in a complex, multi-partnership environment;
  • Advanced negotiation, conflict resolution, facilitation and influencing skills;
  • Ability to independently lead and oversee legal initiatives, assignments and projects, ensuring partner consultation, collaboration, and timely and effective deliverables;
  • Proven ability to work under pressure and respond to competing demands and changing and / or conflicting priorities;
  • Ability to maintain legal expertise by remaining current with changes to the legal landscape.
  • Preferred or Asset Skills :

  • Experience within a university environment;
  • Experience providing legal advice and direction on compliance programs.
  • Salary and Total Rewards :

  • Job Grade O, Salary Scale ($83,440-$143,040);
  • Target Hiring Range : $83,440-$105,000;
  • This is a permanent position that includes :
