Title : Resident Care Worker

Reports To :

Registered Nurse or Supervisor / Director of Nursing

Summary :

In accordance with the philosophy, procedures, and policies of The Mount Continuing Care Community, and under the direction of the Director of Nursing, resident care workers provide care services to ensure safe, effective care for the residents. Resident care workers assist nurses, facility staff and physicians in the basic care of residents. This position reports to the Registered Nurse, or Director of Nursing, and assumes authority, responsibility, and accountability for the delivery of nursing services in our continuing care community.

Job Duties :

  • Provides for the dignity and safety of the residents and meets the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of each resident using the Person Centered Care Philosophy.
  • Answer call signals; assist with elimination needs; assist with resident hygiene, dress and groom residents; serve meal trays, assist in feeding of residents and assist residents with menu selection; weigh, lift, turn, and position residents; assist with ambulation and mobility; set up and provide leisure activities for patients, accompany patients on outside recreational activities and perform other duties related to patient care and comfort.
  • Administration of creams, ointments, salves. Documentation of treatments.
  • Measuring and recording blood glucose levels.
  • Take residents' blood pressure, temperature and pulse; report or record fluid intake and output; observe or monitor resident status and document care on charts; report to Registered Nurse any changes in status.
  • Collect specimens such as urine, feces or sputum; administer suppositories, and perform other procedures as directed.
  • Transfer, lift, and reposition residents using correct techniques.
  • Use Gentle Persuasive Approach to re-direct residents and manage responsive behaviors.
  • Communicate and work effectively with all residents and family members as well as other team members and supervisors.
  • Carry messages, reports, requisitions and specimens between departments.
  • Make beds and maintain resident rooms.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies.
  • May perform tasks such as assisting with the set-up and maintenance of medical or other equipment, cleaning or sterilizing equipment.
  • Demonstrate safe and effective use of devices and equipment
  • Specialized care including catheter care, colostomy care, skin and wound care, monitoring of oxygen equipment.
  • Perform basic first aid measures and emergency procedures including CPR and anti-choking manoeuver.
  • May transport residents between facilities.
  • Monitor, address, document and report symptoms and changes in residents' daily physical, emotional, social, psychological and spiritual functioning.
  • Provide for the needs and wishes and necessary support of the resident and family in end of life care.
  • Engage and interact with and provide support to family members and empower family members to assume the level and kind of care they are comfortable with.
  • Participate in resident care conferences and assists with the revision of goals, priorities and nursing interventions.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with the highest degree of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Ability to multi-task, adapt, re-arrange, and compromise to provide quality care in a timely manner.
  • Recognize the value and importance of ongoing education and seeks educational opportunities.
  • Understand the special ethical issues in the care of seniors.
  • Act as an advocate for residents who cannot speak for themselves
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications :

  • Education from university or college from a recognized RCW program. Equivalencies will be considered.
  • Up to date CPR (within the past year).
  • Criminal record check.
  • On hire must provide or complete an RCW competencies profile and demonstrate core competencies and identify learning needs.
  • Working Conditions :

  • Rotating shifts between 3 and 12 hours.
  • Rotating shifts including days, evenings, weekends, nights and holidays.
  • Neighborhoods will consist of 15-19 residents.
  • Frequent interaction with residents, family members, and the public.
  • Additional Information :

  • Ability to work as a team member and ability to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to work with residents who have mild, moderate, and severe dementia.
  • Up to date vaccinations and tuberculosis testing required.
  • Must have the physical ability to transfer, reposition, and lift residents as needed.
  • Standing for an extended period of time. Must be able to bend, squat, sit, kneel, twist, reach, crouch, and turn.
  • Experience in a long-term care environment is an asset.
