The Director, Tax will be responsible for all income and commodity tax provisions and returns and report to the VP, North American Tax Life & Health. This role is responsible for the local tax authority domestic audit deliveries and requirements, along with research of various tax related topics and providing or assisting in interpretation. The Director, Tax (Insurance) also manages or provides assistance in a variety of tax compliance and governance / administration functions.
Key Accountabilities
Tax Compliance and Governance
- Manage all quarterly and annual corporate income and commodity tax provisions
- Manage the annual return and supporting schedules for the Life Branch and Management Service Company and other related companies
- Manage the tax investment schedules including the preparation of the Canadian Investment Fund
- Gather and verify all supporting documentation from various departments
- Manage and review all tax reporting requirements to Head Office group tax
- Manage and review the income tax and commodity tax continuity schedules and tax rate table
- Analyze provision to return differences
- Responsible for corporate tax installment remittances process
- Participate in Tax Compliance and Governance projects as required
Domestic Tax Audits
Responsible for responding to annual external audit and government domestic tax audit queriesProject manage audit query responses including the coordination with various departments making significant connections between various parties to present a cohesive representation of the informationDevelop strong relationships with Tax authoritiesMaintain organized audit ready files with appropriate documentation that are fully referenced and supportedStrategic
Monitor and analyze various strategic tax activities (Branch Tax Election and SFFO)Assist in tax related special projects, research and analysis (Payroll, Pension, Group Tax)Contribute to various other projects (Solvency II, Investment Duration analysis, M&A due diligence)Continuous development of process improvements and automation to the tax compliance processPerform research and analysis independently to support tax positionsProvide technical support to ensure compliance with federal and provincial and applicable foreign and domestic tax laws and regulationsRisks, Controls and Operational Excellence
Assist in the management or manage tax legal matters to resolution (Items in Appeals / Courts)Partner with various departments to develop and create efficienciesEstablish process alignment and improvements (Technical Accounting, Reporting, Data Analytics)Create and maintain documentation that supports the company's tax positionRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Post-secondary education and recognized accounting accreditation (CPA, CA / CPA, CMA, CGA)Completion of CICA In-depth tax course is required8-10 years post designation tax experience required (9-12 years post-graduation)Knowledge of Insurance taxation is required (Life or P&C)Demonstrated passion for establishing best practices and embraces opportunities for change through process and technology efficienciesWell-developed time management skills with ability to prioritize tasks and work efficiently under tight deadlinesAbility to present financial information in a clear and concise mannerAdvanced skills in Excel.
