Your new role
We are seeking a seasoned Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Supervisor to support our open pit mining team. The EHS Supervisor is a key leadership role, working with all functions of the business.
The role will provide leadership for the project in the definition, development, and improvement of environmental, safety, and health performance so that the project can achieve performance targets and meet business goals.
- Reports to the Project Manager with functional support and direction from the North American Regional EHS Director.
- Acts as the Thiess representative for all regulatory Environmental, Safety and Health compliance and is responsible for any reporting to the appropriate Ministry(s).
- Responsible for the monitoring, sampling and testing of Environmental, Safety and Health to ensure Regulatory compliance.
- Advocate for the Internal Responsibility System (IRS).
- Has authority within the scope of Environmental, Health, and Safety to provide guidance, support and supervision to personnel assigned to support the project.
- Maintains relationships with both internal and external clients (e.g., engineering, operations, and contracts), Union(s), customer and contractor / subcontractor representatives to coordinate the application of Thiess EHS processes across the Project.
- Oversee the monitoring and retention of subcontractor clearance certificates.
- Supports the development and implementation of training programs for the project, based on applicable regulations, corporate requirements, and job requirements or in response to identified gaps.
- Accountable for the development, implementation, review and monitoring of the Project’s Environmental, Health, and Safety program, including the development of policies and procedures, in compliance with all Ontario and other relevant Canadian legislation.
- Provide leadership and support to project EHS personnel.
- Leads and / or supports investigations, and effectively documents any incidents or near misses with the focus on identifying and eliminating the root causes in an effort to eliminate reoccurrences.
- Develop EHS reports including Regulatory, Thiess Project / Regional and Client in a timely, accurate, and professional manner.
- Serves as a support to the Joint Health and Safety Committee. Support and / or facilitates monthly workplace inspections or such other audits / inspections as needed or directed.
- Work collaboratively with the local Union in executing on responsibilities.
- Monitor and manage the Thiess Event Management and Reporting Database (Synergy) to ensure quality and timeliness of data entry.
- Create, communicate, monitor, and ensure efficacy of the project’s emergency response process and procedure.
- Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders to identify suitable work for accommodated employees or employees with a modified work requirement.
- Conducts detailed analysis on the Projects performance and provide reports highlighting opportunities for improvements to the Project Leadership team.
- Coordinates with Client Health, external providers and regulatory entities for all matters relating to employee health and welfare.
- Supports the Global and Regional EHS Function with development, implementation and promotion of EHS initiatives and campaigns.
- Perform other related duties as assigned
What you need to succeed
- Minimum 5-7 years' experience in similar role or industry based in Ontario
- Advanced knowledge of Ontario Ministry of Environment, Ontario Mining Act, the Ontario Ministry of Mining, Technical Standards and Safety Authority, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act & applicable Regulations.
- Able to identify, understand and control risks and hazards associated with mining operations.
- Proficient knowledge of mining planning and execution
- Advanced knowledge and experience in the proficient use of Microsoft Office applications i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Advanced level of knowledge in safety / health / environmental assessments / inspections during pre-stripping, mine development and mine operations
- Proficient in developing and implementing safety, health and environmental awareness training programs
- Ability to navigate and manage key internal and external relationships.
- Proficient with ISOs 9001, 14001, 45001
- Strong leadership, coaching and organizational skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
