(Al-Pac) is seeking a Specialist, Process Engineer to work out of our mill site near Athabasca, Alberta. The successful candidate will be responsible for reporting to the Team Lead, Process Engineering. The job provides process engineering and technical support for pulp mill operating areas, projects, customer service and the environment team. This work focuses on process analysis and optimization for improved reliability, reduced energy usage and environmental impact, and reduced costs; process troubleshooting; performing trials and studies on new technology and process changes; supporting / managing projects; participation in risk assessment and key performance indicator (KPI) review activities.Who Are We?Al-Pac is the largest single-line kraft pulp producer in North America.   • Role ResponsibilitiesProcess Improvement and Engineering SolutionsIdentify improvements in existing processes, systems, and procedures, and use change management programs and onsite trials to address them. Interface with research and educational institutes to leverage technology developments.Contribute to design of engineering solutions that conform to organizational and / or regulatory standards and supervise implementation. Contribute to the analysis of information, specification of unit operations, and selection of equipment required to improve processes, deliver products within quality parameters, and minimizing cost and environmental impact.Engineering Documentation ControlContribute to the analysis of information, the drafting of engineering standards / specifications, and the evaluation of the effectiveness within own discipline to inform engineering work in the organization.Review and update process documentation (e.G. P&C / P&ID) and coordinate outside resources when required. Ensure professional work packages are stamped and validated where applicable.Management of Change Support Provide process decisions and design input on behalf of major equipment areas; participate in risk assessments and HAZOPs; support and perform document updates and reviews; participate in onsite commissioning Project and Contract Management Support Deliver required outcomes by managing a small department / OpEx budget and coordinating contract service providers and internal resources to support projects. Interface with vendors and suppliers to develop scope of work details as necessary to support Purchasing & Contracts.Mentorship and Team SupportFoster a culture of inclusion and collaboration within Technical & Environment department teams.Provide support to other groups within Technical & Environment; provide technical inputto collaborate, direct, and enhance lab technician routine tasks, project work, lab trials, and analyzer calibration.Provide mentorship and coaching to junior members; this includes Professional Engineering mentorship of Engineers-in-Training and Certified Engineering Technologist mentorship of ASET members, as applicable. Operations, Process Safety, and EnvironmentProvide dedicated technical service to Operations Areas through a focus on optimization, process safety, quality control, customer service, and environment. Determine business impact of potential regulation changes; provide process engineering required for reporting and applications; optimize and monitor processes to minimize incidents, operations downtime, and / or environmental impacts. Support onsite quality and environmental management systems and related audits (i.E. ISO 9001, 14001, 17025). Maintaining the Process Information Management and Trending Tool (MOPSys) Maintain the calculation inputs and graphics associated with the onsite process monitoring / trending tool, MOPSys.Role RequirementsUniversity Degree or Technologist Diploma in Chemical or Process Engineering; University Degree in Chemistry or a related science with 4 years of related experience. Registered or eligible for registration with APEGA as a professional engineer or registered or eligible for registration with ASET as a certified engineering technologist as applicable.Must hold a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.Experience working within a Pulp Mill or chemical industrial sector is considered an asset. Experience reading and interpreting technical drawings and schematics is an asset.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.OtherData Analysis and Trending – ability to manipulate and analyze data to recognize patterns and trends; able to recognize relationships and dependencies between data sets; monitor to recognize changes over time. Ability to use common computer programs effectively (MS Office Suite). Technical Writing and Communication – prepare memorandums, reports, and communication emails for a technical audience; prepare and present technical findings to Operations and Management groups; clearly summarize and communicate conclusions and recommendations as actionable items.Collaboration – collaborate effectively between multiple stakeholders of varying technical knowledge and involvement to ensure concerns are met and addressed. Strive towards effective solutions that build consensus and ensure end goals are achieved. Risk Assessments – familiarity with process hazard analysis fundamentals and cause-and-effect thinking; able to learn to analyze process systems to enhance millsite safety.Chemistry – working knowledge of chemical and chemistry fundamentals, including thermodynamic principles and relationships.Prioritization and Time Management – able to prioritize work and requirements from a variety of stakeholders to ensure timelines are met and workload is effectively managed.
