Your opportunity :

The Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy (ISUP) is the centre for research on teaching and learning at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM).

Established in 2020, ISUP advances the study of university pedagogy. In collaboration with faculty, staff, and students across UTM, we support the development of students’ academic skills through courses, consultations, workshops and programs.

We also support faculty pedagogy and the scholarship of teaching and learning through programming and one-on-one consultations.

These offering s are informed by our commitment to innovative, inclusive, and accessible pedagogy.

ISUP’s faculty and staff support the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre (RGASC); the Teaching & Learning Collaboration;

utmONE, utmONE Scholars, and Foundational Skills courses; and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).

Within ISUP, the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre (RGASC) is a hub for academic skills development on the University of Toronto Mississauga campus.

The mandate of the RGASC is to support and promote teaching and learning in a range of contexts across the University of Toronto Mississauga.

For students, the RGASC is a resource for developing academic skills through individual appointments and group-based initiatives that help students identify and develop the academic skills they need for success in their studies.

For instructional staff and faculty, the RGASC is a partner in teaching and learning activities. These activities include course and program design, implementation and assessment of a given intervention’s impact.

Faculty and staff appointed to the RGASC have a range of specializations, including academic peer support, academic writing instruction, educational development, English language learning, numeracy, scientific literacy, and supplemental instruction.

This diversity of experience and expertise enables the RGASC to collaborate productively with partners from across the disciplines and campus, who bring with them a varied and diverse set of teaching and learning objectives.

Reporting into the Assistant Director, ISUP and working closely with the RGASC Director, Outreach and Engagement Coordinator and staff at the RGASC, the Administrative & Communication Assistant serves as the first point of contact for students, staff and faculty arriving at the RGASC.

The incumbentplays the integral role of greeting visitors, responding to enquiries, and assisting with scheduling and program registration.

They will serve as a resource for students and faculty and support the Centre’s day-to-day activities. The Administrative& Communications Assistant will also assist in engagement and promotional activities by creating content for the Centre’s social media channels, updating the website and designing promotional material.

Your responsibilities will include :

  • Acting as the first point of contact for general enquiries.
  • Resolving issues within the scope of the role and escalating problems as required.
  • Applying established standards to control the distribution of access to designated University spaces.
  • Liaising with internal and external contacts to troubleshoot / resolve escalated technical issues.
  • Verifying that websites are compliant with the University’s web space guide.
  • Coordinating the preparation and distribution of promotional / outreach materials.
  • Maintaining information on digital platforms.
  • Serving as a resource to others by providing (non-supervisory) job-related guidance.

Essential Qualifications :

  • Advanced College Diploma (3 years) or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum two years experience in a front line administrative role, preferably within post-secondary education.
  • Must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.
  • Experience assessing client needs and directing them to the appropriate resources.
  • Advanced skills in MS Office Suite, file management systems (i.e. SharePoint), learning management systems (i.e. Quercus) and Zoom.
  • Experience working with scheduling and booking systems (WCOnline).
  • Demonstrated experience in managing a range of web publishing, communications and design tools (Drupal, Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva Pro).
  • Experience developing social media campaigns, including creating, producing and posting social media content, with particular emphasis on visually oriented social media (Instagram).
  • Knowledgeable of Inclusive Design for social media principles.
  • Excellent organization, time management and decision-making abilities. Able to multi-task and deal effectively with competing priorities.
  • Strong writing andcommunication skills.
  • Experience working with students and volunteers.
