Senior Structural Engineer

Engineering Office Location : Vancouver, BC (Engineering Office)

Project Site : Bagdad AZ

Sector : Mining - Copper Concentrator plant

Experience level : Senior - (10+ years)

Introduction

Brunel is currently seeking a Senior Structural Engineer (Contract) for a global leading mining client supporting their copper mine operations. This position will be based in Vancouver, BC, Canada, with site visits to Bagdad, AZ, USA. Some remote work may be possible.

In this role, you will provide technical expertise and project leadership across civil and structural engineering disciplines, with a focus on copper concentrator plants. Responsibilities include supervising and guiding teams, managing design and construction activities, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and client requirements. You will be involved in bulk earthworks, concrete structures, site supervision, and structural design for critical mining infrastructure such as primary crushers, conveyor systems, concentrator buildings, SAG and ball mills, flotation cells, regrinding circuits, and tailings thickeners.

This role also includes site inspections, geotechnical reviews, 3D model assessments, material take-offs (MTOs), forecasting, reporting, and construction support. As a key technical leader, you will oversee multidisciplinary projects, provide strategic guidance, and drive successful project execution within scope, budget, and schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Apply working knowledge of engineering principles to assigned engineering projects, using sound engineering, data measurement & collection, calculations, analysis, interpretation and problem solving.
  • Provide guidance and counsel to the site management team on applicable processes, practices, and existing / proposed local, state and federal regulations.
  • Develop and / or review scopes of work, evaluate proposals, draft formalized internal requests for funding, and administer contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment as approved and required.
  • Identify opportunities for improvements and determine associated value for risk reduction measures.
  • Lead the efforts on large / complex engineering projects, which may include the development of new or modification to existing systems and processes, including the responsibility of approving work from other engineering disciplines.
  • May evaluate and administer contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment as approved and required.
  • Review, interpret, comment on and approve both civil and structural engineering deliverables. Review reports for both civil and structural design projects and provide recommendations to site team and to project consultants.
  • Manage projects and serve as a civil and structural subject matter expert (SME) on large / complex site planning / construction, expansion or modifications.
  • Contribute to project site strategic planning and budgeting efforts for both civil and structural engineering areas.
  • Field support : Provide technical support during construction, including site visits, addressing field changes and liaising with contractors to ensure integrity of the structural designs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil and / or Structural Engineering or related engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum and five (10) years related experience in engineering or a related field, OR
  • Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering or related engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum and three (10) years of experience in engineering or related scientific field.
  • Knowledge of principles and practice of civil, structural, geotechnical, water resources, water quality / treatment, copper concentrators plants with large rotating equipment and / or geological engineering.
  • Demonstrate technical competence through engineering and / or operations experience in at least one of the following work areas : earthworks, structural steel design, concrete design, construction supervision, dams, conveyor belts, flotation cells, process water balance, tailings thickeners and slurry transport.
  • Proficient in MS Office and other engineering drafting tools such as CAD, design Software as Staad Pro, Risa 3D and 3D review tools such as Navisworks, Smart Plant Review, Analytical, mapping, etc.
  • Knowledge of Process Industry Practices (PIP), and US Codes (ASCE, ACI, AISC, IBC and AWS)
  • Language Skills, Certifications and / or Training

  • Fluency in English
  • Broad knowledge of the principles and practices of civil and structural engineering
  • Ability to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw valid conclusions
  • Skill in effective communication, both verbal and written, including the ability to actively listen and to adapt behavior and communication style based upon the audience
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Skill in following safety practices, and recognizing, controlling and / or eliminating hazards
  • Ability to build trust and credibility with employees / peers and establish common goals and expectations
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Preferred Education and Experience :

  • Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering (Preferred)
  • Professional Engineer’s license
  • At least 10 or more years of work experience
  • Experience with metal mining operations, especially copper concentrator plants with regards to geotechnical, structural, earth and concrete works.
  • Experience with cost estimating for civil and structural projects, project scheduling and project controls
  • Experience in model reviews with Client and model review milestones
  • Skilled in related engineering software (AutoCAD / Civil 3D, ArcGIS, GoldSim), programming languages
