Job description

The Finance Manager oversees all financial activities within the Toronto manufacturing division. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role ensures accurate and timely financial reporting, provides strategic financial guidance to the management team, and implements robust accounting policies and systems. A critical component of this role is leveraging expertise in manufacturing accounting to drive financial performance through insightful analysis, managing budgeting and forecasting processes, and ensuring compliance with all applicable Canadian tax and financial regulations.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Provide leadership and technical oversight to the accounting team in managing day-to-day financial functions.
  • Partner with the site Management Team to deliver real-time financial analysis and support commercially focused decision-making.
  • Actively engage with site management to address financial issues, updates, and concerns.

Financial Reporting and Analysis

  • Prepare regular financial reports, including comparisons of monthly results against targets and other key metrics.
  • Present financial results with year-over-year, month-over-month, and quarter-over-quarter analyses.
  • Deliver insights through comprehensive ROI calculations for fixed asset submission requests.
  • Costing and Budgeting

  • Maintain and update the standard costing system, ensuring accuracy in manufacturing cost accounting.
  • Collaborate with site management to prepare annual budgets and rolling forecasts.
  • Monitor actual revenues and expenditures against budgets / forecasts and report variances.
  • Policy Implementation and Compliance

  • Develop and implement accounting policies, procedures, and systems to ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal and provincial tax reporting requirements in Canada, acting as the legislative liaison for financial matters.
  • Support external auditors and assist with tax planning in collaboration with external tax accountants.
  • Continuous Improvement and Training

  • Stay current with changes in accounting standards and Canadian regulatory developments.
  • Attend internal management and all-staff meetings to align financial strategies with organizational goals.
  • Motivate and build a high-performing finance team capable of meeting tight deadlines and delivering quality results.
  • Qualifications

    Essential

  • Professional accounting designation required (e.g., CPA Canada or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in a senior accounting role, with at least 3 years of direct manufacturing accounting experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in analyzing financial data within a manufacturing environment, including costing, inventory management, and production-related financial reporting.
  • Advanced analytical skills with the ability to extract and leverage financial data for strategic decision-making.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and familiarity with financial systems and network tools.
