Scope

Spend your summer creating positive recreation experiences for kids and youth!

As part of the Community & Recreation Services Division, you'll be working in a fast-paced, creative environment focused on delivering active, safe programs for kids and youth to develop their skills, while meeting new friends. The City of Surrey is a HIGH FIVE® registered organization. We are committed to ensuring that every child in our programs has a positive recreation experience. Our Summer Day Camps are offered in a variety of facilities including recreation centres, schools, community halls, arenas, pools and parks.

We are recruiting for both Auxiliary and On-Call City Wide positions. Auxiliary is ideal for an individual who can commit to working on a regular basis Monday - Friday in July and August 2025. On-Call is ideal for an individual who cannot commit to working on a regular basis Monday - Friday in July and August 2025. We expect staff to be available Monday to Friday, however hours of work depend on operational needs and camps running each week.

Responsibilities

Junior Day Camp Leaders (Community Services Assistant 1) are responsible for providing day camp participants with an active, safe, and stimulating environment to develop social skills and general well-being.

Senior Day Camp Leaders (Community Services Assistant 2) are responsible - in addition to the responsibilities associated with the Junior Leader (CSA1) - for the design and implementation of day camp programs for children and youth.

Specialty Day Camp Leaders (Non-Union) are responsible for the design and implementation of day camp programs for children and youth. Experience in specific skills, such as sports, dance, swimming, skating, etc. is an asset for our camps that run in a recreation setting.

Qualifications

The Junior Day Camp Leaders (Community Services Assistant 1) will have :

  • Current Emergency First Aid and CPR C with AED certificate (current certifications or willing to be obtained by February 22, 2025).
  • Completion of Grade 10 supplemented by some relevant experience in community service work or an equivalent acceptable combination of training and experience.
  • Previous experience working with children.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, volunteers, staff, and the public.
  • Experience working in a recreation setting.
  • The ability to swim and skate are an asset.
  • The Senior Day Camp Leaders (Community Services Assistant 2) will have :

  • Current Emergency First Aid and CPR C with AED certificate (current certifications or willing to be obtained by February 22, 2025).
  • Completion of Grade 10 supplemented by some relevant experience in community service work or an equivalent acceptable combination of training and experience.
  • Previous experience working with children.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, volunteers, staff, and the public.
  • Experience working in a recreation setting.
  • The ability to swim and skate are an asset.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills.
  • The Non-Union Specialty Camp Instructors will have some of the following :

  • Current Emergency First Aid and CPR C with AED certificate (current certifications or willing to be obtained by February 22, 2025).
  • Previous experience working with children.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, volunteers, staff, and the public.
  • Experience in a recreation setting.
  • Experience in specialized instructional skill in visual arts or performing arts.
  • Experiencing teaching sports, language, science, or cooking.
