Document Support, Geoscience – Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently recruiting for part-time Document Support, Geoscience to assist in the conversion of scanned geological borehole data to digital data records for the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS).
The Alberta Geological Survey is the custodian of original Alberta Research Council coal borehole logs in PDF format. These logs are among the highest quality geological information pertaining to the shallow subsurface of Alberta and describe sediments and bedrock throughout much of the province.
To be utilized in modern groundwater studies, the coal borehole logs must be converted to tabular format in Microsoft Excel. Borehole log conversion contributes to important initiatives such as groundwater resource identification and protection, sediment and bedrock characterization, and bedrock topography and sediment thickness mapping. These initiatives help the AGS achieve our mandate to use a results-based approach for the stewardship and protection of Alberta’s environment while enabling sustainable resource development.
What your day-to-day will look like :
Use specialized software (e.g., Esri ArcPro GIS) to identify and access borehole logs.
Review and document geological information such as depth, rock type, and supplemental data in an Excel spreadsheet.
Update inventory of completed borehole logs in a GIS database.
Assemble supplemental information such as graphical geophysical data for future data conversion.
Ensure electronic documents are legible, complete, accurate and available within a timely manner, and in accordance with AER guidelines and regulations.
What we’re looking for in you :
High school diploma or relevant education. Upstream Petroleum Certificate and / or Microsoft Office Suite Certification are considered assets.
2 to 5 years of related experience, and basic knowledge of earth science or civil / environmental / geological engineering principles is preferred.
Experience using Microsoft Excel is required along with interest to learn new software applications.

Collaborative approach to trouble-shooting, problem solving, research, and the ability to focus on a repetitive task with attention to detail.
Process improvement mindset and an interest in implementing technology to improve workflow.
