THE POSITION

The Enhanced Extern Program is a Ministry of Ontario funded program that enables hospitals to supplement existing health human resources. Enhanced extern – therapy are clinical learners hired as unregulated care providers. The enhanced extern – therapy will be immersed in our hospital setting, working within an interprofessional model of care under the direct and indirect supervision of regulated health care providers (e.g. Registered Nurse, Registered Practical Nurse, Occupational Therapist, or Physiotherapist) in their assigned clinical area within the hospital. While enhanced extern - therapy are Holland Bloorview employees, they cannot replace therapy staff or be redeployed. The Regulated Health Professions Act, College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, and College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario direct the type of care they can provide based on the level of supervision needed. They may perform pre-identified Controlled Acts authorized to them within the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) of Ontario that are assigned or delegated to them under the supervision of a regulated health care provider who is authorized to perform them. Ultimately, this exciting program will provide the enhanced extern - therapy with the platform to develop important clinical skills while increasing their knowledge of our hospital community.

Enhanced externs – therapy education and training background will vary. Enhanced externs – therapy must have the knowledge, skill and judgement to ensure safe and appropriate delivery of care. Successful candidates will be required to work on the inpatient units with selected opportunities to work off unit. Enhanced externs – therapy will be hired on contract, during which they will work part time hours to a maximum of full-time hours (75 hours bi-weekly). The scheduling of these hours will be determined based on program needs and may include day / evening / night and weekend shifts. Shifts will be a minimum of 4 hours to a maximum of 12 hours - working around schooling commitments and available mentorship.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs the following under the direct and indirect supervision of a nurse, OT, PT, or other regulated health care provider :

  • Provides safe care that promotes and supports the physical, psychosocial and spiritual wellbeing of clients and families
  • Supports and respects the client / family’s rights to make decisions based on their own values, beliefs and experiences
  • Provides care in collaboration with the client and family, supporting client activities of daily living, personalized care needs, and communicates with interdisciplinary care team members and community providers as appropriate
  • Assist with client positioning & repositioning (e.g. bed, wheelchair, turning)
  • Assist with client transfers : (e.g. wheelchair to bed via mechanical lift or other, commode to toilet, bed to two-wheeled walker)
  • Assist with client range of motion, weight-bearing activities, and utilization of appropriate assistive devices when required (e.g. cane, walker, wheelchair, appropriate footwear, splints)
  • Assist clients in working towards their identified program goals as appropriate and under the direction of nurse or other regulated health care provider
  • Assist with client functional mobility assessments and contribute to care planning and evaluation with therapists when applicable
  • Reports patient observations to appropriate member of the care team (e.g. changes in skin appearance, comfort or safety factors) and liaises with appropriate members of the care team to identify patient care needs
  • Restocking of isolation carts and supply room in therapy spaces
  • Sanitization and organization of equipment
  • Specific administrative tasks (e.g. inventory, clinical resource organization, print labels, other)
  • Demonstrates accountability for the client care that they provide by adhering to Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital’s Policies and Procedures
  • Support development of client independence in the practice of scheduling and directing their own care as related to self-care, productivity and recreation / leisure participation.
  • In partnership with clients / families and the interdisciplinary team, assist with the provision of client and family-centred care which is goal directed, evidence based and outcome oriented
  • Establishes onboarding goals and objectives
  • Maintains own knowledge, skills, and abilities through attendance at onboarding, in-house education sessions, and other continuing education opportunities
  • Utilizes a strength based approach to care
  • Communicates in a timely and effective manner
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client / patient safety through work and daily practices

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be enrolled in any year of study in an OT or PT Master’s program at a Canadian University.
  • Current BCLS certificate—Basic Rescuer required.
  • Pediatric clinical placement experience and / or experience in working with children and youth preferred
  • Experience in behaviour management preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated responsibility and skills to work independently
  • Completion of mandatory / required certifications provided via corporate orientation, including enhanced extern - therapy orientation, and as defined by program (e.g. Mask Fit Test, WHMIS, AODA, IPAC)
