About the Opportunity

RDN has an exciting opportunity for a permanent full-time Wastewater Superintendent , primarily based at the French Creek Pollution Control Centre on Vancouver Island, BC , servicing the Northern Communities of the Regional District of Nanaimo.

Reporting to the Manager of Wastewater Services, you will oversee the effective operation, maintenance, and compliance of the Department’s wastewater facilities, ensuring safety, regulatory adherence, and environmental standards are met.

In this position, you will be primarily responsible for leading Wastewater Services staff to meet the strategic and operational goals of the RDN Board, managing the Department’s facilities, assets, and operational permits to uphold regulatory and environmental requirements.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

  • Managing departmental facilities to meet Waste Management permits, regulations, and environmental standards
  • Promoting and enforcing compliance with health, safety, and environmental protocols, including identifying and revising safety policies, investigating incidents, and preparing reports per RDN and WorkSafeBC standards
  • Developing and overseeing work plans, budgets, and strategies for staffing, contracting, and resource allocation
  • Leading, training, and supervising unionized staff while fostering cross-departmental collaboration to support work plans
  • Coordinating wastewater staff operations, including scheduling, training, performance management, and safe work practices
  • Fostering a collaborative and efficient workplace, implementing improvements to optimize plant performance and cost-effectiveness
  • Liaising with regulatory bodies, municipalities, and community stakeholders on operational and compliance matters
  • Preparing and presenting reports and recommendations for senior management and the RDN Board to guide decisions

More About You

To qualify, you will need an undergraduate degree or diploma in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering , or a related field, along with extensive related experience in wastewater or water services .

Supervisory experience is also required, preferably within wastewater or water services, however supervisory experience in other industrial settings such as forestry, manufacturing or pulp and paper would be considered.

An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

The following are also required :

  • An Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP) Class 3 or 4 Certificate in Wastewater Treatment , or an equivalent transferable certification with the ability to complete required testing
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to undergo a criminal record check

The following skills and experience will be strong assets :

  • In-depth knowledge of provincial Environmental Waste Management Act Municipal Sewage Regulations
  • Strong understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Regulations related to wastewater treatment operations
  • Proficiency in HR processes, including performance management, training, and workforce development
  • Proven leadership abilities in supervising and managing unionized staff and promoting collaboration
  • Experience in developing and managing budgets, work plans, and resource allocation strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret, apply, and administer contracts
  • Background in safety training and policy development within an industrial setting
  • Excellent communication skills for fostering positive relationships with regulatory bodies and stakeholders
