Job Summary

The Roller Operator is proficient and skilled in the operation of various types of double drum and combination asphalt compaction rollers to provide adequate compaction and workmanship in asphalt paving. The Roller Operator must be experienced in all aspects of asphalt mix compaction including parking lots, residential subdivisions, collectors and arterial roadways and highway work.

Main Responsibilities

  • Operate self-propelled steel-wheeled, rubber-tired, vibrator, segmented or other type of roller to compact earth, subgrade, sub-base and asphalt surfaces.
  • Distribute, break down, compress and give a finished surface to cooling asphalt.
  • Knowledge of rolling patterns and applications to achieve compaction and smoothness.
  • Determine speed and direction of machine based on knowledge of compressibility of materials under changing temperature.
  • Push hand roller and pound surfaces, using hand tamp, or guide portable power roller over areas not accessible to road roller.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Certifications

  • Must have a valid Class 5 (or better) driver’s license with clean drivers abstract.
  • Own transportation.
  • Work Experience

  • Experience in asphalt paving required.
  • Technical Skills

  • Must be able to perform heavy manual labour under adverse weather conditions.
  • Familiarity with the materials, tools and machinery used.
  • Must be able to meet all safety requirements and applicable safety policies.
  • Ability to work cooperatively independently and with a team in a fast-paced and complex environment.

  • Working Conditions

  • Overtime as required.
  • Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust, grease, fumes, odors, oil, asphalt, and toxic and flammable substances.
  • Required to perform tasks that involve heavy lifting, bending, and strenuous movements.
  • Use of personal protection equipment is required.
  • Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear required when working outdoors.
  • Required to perform tasks that involve bending and strenuous movements.
  • Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol policy, including testing requirements.
  • Must comply with all company policies.
