Job Outline :
Reporting to the Manager, Financial Accounting and Reporting, the Senior Financial Analyst will be an integral member of the financial reporting team performing a range of professional accounting activities including analysis and reporting of hospital financial results, including assistance in the preparation of financial statements for the year-end audit.
The incumbent will work autonomously to analyze financial results and work with Managers of an assigned Program or Business Units to interpret and present the financial impact of operational decisions as well as identify areas of process improvement by providing evidence based information to execute decisions and monitor results.
The incumbent will review processes and identify / implement changes as required to ensure efficient, timely and quality information reporting as well as a wide range of professional accounting activities.
Month End and Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations and ensure that adjustments / corrections are made as necessary
- Review and analyze monthly financial results for assigned portfolio and ensure its accuracy and compliance with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS)
- Research and prepare accounting briefing notes for complex accounting issues
- Prepare monthly and quarterly financial summaries for distribution to Senior Leadership explaining and analyzing material variances
Review, Analyze and Present Program and Business Unit Results
- Become a subject matter expert (SME) for assigned portfolio
- Prepare comparative analysis against budget and historical results
- Identify key operating drivers and perform benchmarking analysis
- Present findings at monthly / quarterly reviews with clinicians, managers and directors
- Champion action plans for meeting budget targets and develop forecasts
External Reporting
- Prepare quarterly and annual Ministry reporting submissions
- On an annual basis, prepare hospital external financial statements, and coordinate with departments to prepare the notes to the financial statements and supporting schedules
- Assist in the preparation and filing of various returns to statutory agencies
Treasury - As Needed
- Prepare and analyze weekly / monthly cash forecasting and provide recommendations to ensure the hospital meets its key liquidity ratios
- Prepare bank reconciliations and implement process improvements as necessary
- Investigate, analyze and resolve bank discrepancies
- Record weekly and daily bank activity in the general ledger
Other Duties
- Innovate new ways for data collection and analysis
- Learn and master Management Information Standards (MIS)
- Participate in special projects or committees as required
- Identify opportunities for process improvement to help streamline current processes
Education and Qualifications :
- Qualified Accountant (CA,CPA, CMA, CGA) with 1-3 years post-qualification experience in financial analysis, process improvement and treasury related work
- Positive and self-directed with a high level of accountability and the ability to collaborate to deliver complete and complex financial analysis with in depth analytics
- Demonstrated logic and creative approach to problem solving, moving from information to insights to implications to action items
- Superior interpersonal skills with effective verbal and written communication skills with all levels of management and Senior Leadership
- Independent, self-motivated and inquisitive
- Proven organizational and time management skills required with the ability to multitask and meet conflicting deadlines
- Experience in a hospital setting, preferred
- Experience with MOHLTC / LHIN reporting, MIS Guidelines, CRA regulations, preferred
- Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
