The Environmental Services team of the Department of Public Works is growing. Our team plays a pivotal role in ensuring new and existing infrastructure in our Province is sustainably developed with minimal risk to our environment.

About Our Opportunity

As the Senior Environmental Scientist, you will lead the protection and / or restoration of the natural environment during construction, maintenance and operation of major infrastructure programs implemented by the Department. You will initiate, develop and maintain standards, policies, and guidelines applicable to the natural environment, all the while ensuring compliance with applicable provincial and federal legislation.

Primary Accountabilities

You provide the technical expertise, people leadership and project management skills that are necessary to ensure the success of complex and dynamic environmental management programs. You will be responsible to manage and conduct complex environmental studies for major infrastructure projects; prepare, review, and approve various reports; provide summaries and briefings to senior executives; coordinate research and analysis; prepare and conduct presentations; and coordinate and lead multi-disciplinary project teams to effectively deliver Environmental Services projects.

You are key in developing and fostering relationships with various stakeholders and environmental groups and will represent the Department and Environmental Services on various inter-governmental, intra­ governmental, and departmental project teams and steering committees.

We are seeking a results-oriented team leader to supervise our technical staff and manage hired consultants. You play a key role in assisting with mentoring new staff, managing performance, training and development, and engagement of staff.

Qualifications and Experience

You have a Bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences (such as Hydrogeology, Biology, or Engineering) and six (6) years related experience in environmental management and policy, improving environment performance in large infrastructure programs; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

You are up-to-date on current environmental guidelines and regulations. You understand the principles of various scientific disciplines and are able to integrate this knowledge into a cohesive approach to resolving any problems arising during environmental remediation projects.  You are experienced with the procurement process including scope of work development, request for proposal preparation, submissions evaluation, project awards and subsequent contract management.

Proficiency in a computerized environment including spreadsheet, word processing, and email applications is necessary. You have strong project coordination skills to ensure timely completion of project goals and objectives in fast paced environment.

You are an effective team leader and your combined people and communication skills will promote an engaged workforce. Consistently, you maintain a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard for client and customer service.  Daily, you exercise a high degree of individual initiative, self-reliance, and resourcefulness.

You have proven and professional communication skills, both oral and written, for collaborating with various stakeholders. Your well-developed planning and organizational skills, coupled with your ability to multi-task and adapt in a fast-paced environment, will aid in achieving priorities and objectives. Consistently, you maintain a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard for client and customer service.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools : written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

This position has a combination of office and field work. Field work occurs in adverse weather conditions and normal hazards associated with construction sites and working with or near heavy equipment are present.

This position may require climbing and working at heights.

You must be able to work under adverse conditions in times of emergency and sometimes overtime may be required.

Pay Grade :   PR 17

Salary Range :   $3,107.16 - $3,649.33 Bi-Weekly
