Description
Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Finance and Technology, the Director, Financial Control is responsible for leading, planning, and overseeing the activities of their team while building strong and constructive business partnerships with operations and other functions of the Montreal Port Authority (MPA).
The Director, Financial Control is expected to demonstrate leadership by mobilizing their team around the financial and strategic objectives of the MPA. They possess strong accounting expertise and the ability to build internal and external business relationships through excellent communication and influence. They can work effectively under pressure and managing priorities efficiently.
This role plays a key part within the MPA, particularly in the following areas :
- Acting as a financial expert, advising the Executive Vice President, Finance and Technology, and the senior management team on strategic decision-making.
- Leading accounting and financial functions with a business-driven perspective.
- Recruiting, training, developing, and engaging a team of approximately twenty managers and qualified professionals in accounting and finance.
- Driving the digital transformation of the department in collaboration with the Information Technology department.
- Developing and implementing appropriate policies, procedures, and internal control frameworks for the department.
- Recommending and implementing improvements to ensure the integrity of financial information.
- Overseeing relationships with independent auditors.
- Continuously identifying and implementing process improvements.
Key Responsibilities :
Ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of team members.Providing strong leadership to the team by attracting, motivating, training, and retaining skilled and talented professionals to achieve objectives.Planning, prioritizing, and coordinating activities according to established goals.Ensuring the rigor and efficiency of the team's work.Monitoring and controlling activities based on the approved budget.Engaging employees as partners in achieving objectives.Contributing to maintaining a positive work environment.Setting priorities and evaluating both individual and team performance.Coordinating the preparation of financial documents such as authorization requests submitted to the Board of Directors and its committees.Providing guidance and support to other MPA managers and the senior management team to facilitate informed decision-making and support them in financial management, enhancing the quality and profitability of operations.Developing and implementing best practices, financial processes, and budgetary controls, ensuring continuous monitoring and updates to financial systems, policies, and processes.Supervising the preparation and monitoring of annual budgets.Proposing policies and procedures to establish appropriate financial and management controls, safeguarding assets, maximizing returns, and optimizing the efficient use of resources.Establishing and overseeing accounting and internal control processes related to authorizations, monitoring, and asset accounting.Leading and supervising the development and formalization of complex accounting positions in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and ensuring their acceptance by independent auditors.Ensuring that accounting and internal control systems produce financial statements and management reports in compliance with IFRS and MPA policies. The information produced must be high-quality, relevant, reliable, and timely for decision-making.Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
Minimum ten years of relevant experience, including five years in a managerial role in a finance or accounting department that handles payroll, and extensive experience in major investment projects preferred.Member in good standing of the CPA Order.Knowledge of IFRS norms.Experience in process optimization and implementing accounting systems.Management experience in a public-sector enterprise, union environment an asset.Excellent French and English communication skills, spoken and written.Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.Ability to bring out the best in people and encourage talent development.Knowledge of commonly used IT tools such as SAP and Microsoft Office.If you are interested in this position, send your application to :
