Introduction

Reporting to the Manager, Planning and Scheduling, the Project Planning Specialist will be part of one or more project teams performing the required duties of a planner on medium to major projects (total installed costs of projects could range from $50M to in excess of $1B). This role will support projects in both study (up to and including Feasibility) and execution (Detailed Design, Construction). For projects in Construction there is an expectation of the role being site-based.

Initially, the Project Planning Specialist will be either Vancouver based or work remotely. They will primarily assist the Senior Project Planning Specialist in the execution phase of a major project. Whilst in the office, they will also provide part time support on various studies as directed by the Manager, Planning and Scheduling. Once the project is sanctioned and construction commences on the major project, the position will become site based.

Project Planning includes : schedule planning and development, reviews, resource allocation, progress and performance measurement, schedule analysis, forecasting and status reporting. This is a hands-on role requiring development of schedules in Primavera and providing schedule expertise and guidance to the Project team.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.

On a project assignment :

  • Maintains a program master schedule.
  • Performs quality reviews on third party schedules. Recommends corrective actions and supervises their implementation. Integrates third party schedules into overall program master schedule.
  • Responsible for identifying schedule deviations on scope with package owner, and working with package owner to identify and implement mitigations. Notifies package owners on potential schedule trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Responsible for integrating subcontractor schedules into master schedule.
  • Responsible to support forecasting on a monthly basis, as directed by Project Controls Lead (Manager).
  • Responsible to support project reporting and project presentations, as directed by Project Controls Lead (Manager).
  • Responsible for performing scheduling audits on service providers, as appropriate.
  • Responsible for providing schedule input to help the project team define project execution plans and scope
  • Responsible for ensuring Project Controls Overviews and Standards are properly applied and followed on a project with respect to Planning.
  • Requirements

    Post-secondary degree or diploma in engineering, computer science, finance or business, or diploma in a trade, is preferred.

  • 10+ years of planning / scheduling experience, with preference to mining / industrial projects, is required.
  • 3+ years experience in an Owner’s role is required.
  • 3+ years of field experience is required.
  • Experience with on site progress measurement and earned value measurement systems is required
  • Excellent knowledge of project management theory, especially in time and cost management, is required. Strong understanding in the areas of project planning, activity duration estimating, CPM schedule preparation, schedule analysis and schedule system application are essential.
  • Hands on experience in developing and progressing resource loaded schedules in Primavera is required.
  • Major Projects experience in the execution phase for both Contractor and Owner organizations is preferred. Experience going through stage gate processes is preferred
  • Experience working with permitting regulatory bodies and knowledge of environmental studies is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of the engineering and construction industry is required
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills as well as able to prioritize and meet deadlines is required.
  • Comfortable dealing with ambiguity and uncertainty with project scopes is preferred
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving abilities are required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point and Project scheduling software. Strong skills in Primavera P6 are required.
