Position Overview

As a Senior Mechanical Designer ALTEN Canada, Nuclear Department, you will be a key player in designing and analyzing mechanical systems with a particular focus on design verification for nuclear projects. Your expertise in mechanical design, engineering calculations, and structural analysis will contribute to the successful design, verification, and integration of highly regulated and safety-critical systems. In this role, you will work closely with internal teams, customers, and vendors to ensure that designs meet all relevant codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design & Analysis
  • Lead the design and verification efforts of mechanical components and systems for nuclear projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards, safety requirements, and regulatory guidelines (e.g., CSA N285.0, CSA B51, and NQA).
  • Perform structural integrity analysis, material strength evaluations, and functional analysis (forces, strokes, speeds, pressure / flow, accuracy, repeatability, reliability, etc.) to verify design and operating conditions (pressure, temperature, radiation, seismic, etc.).
  • Take engineering responsibility for own work and the work verified or supervised, including signing and sealing engineering documents and drawings as required by the Professional Engineers Act, Ontario.

Compliance & Verification

  • Review and analyze engineering drawings, specifications, and customer requirements to ensure that designs meet or exceed functional and safety specifications.
  • Participate in design reviews with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring adherence to applicable codes and standards.
  • Support design verification through calculations, simulations, and evaluations of mechanical systems and components.
  • Maintain and uphold adherence to relevant quality standards (ISO, CSA N285 / NQA).
  • Collaboration & Support

  • Work cross-functionally with electrical designers, programmers, fabricators, and other engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems with electrical and control components.
  • Liaise with customers, vendors, and internal stakeholders to clarify requirements, provide design updates, and address technical queries.
  • Provide technical design support for the construction of pressure boundary components within Certificate of Authorization.
  • Project Management & Leadership

  • Oversee and mentor junior design staff, providing guidance on technical solutions, design approaches, and best practices.
  • Organize and manage documentation for mechanical design projects, including quotes, requisitions, drawings, schedules, and progress reports.
  • Take on supervisory roles for specific projects, delegating tasks, managing timelines, and coordinating resources.
  • Design Standards & Continuous Improvement

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of design and department standards, ensuring the continued optimization of mechanical design processes and practices.
  • Continuously improve design practices to meet customer needs, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Other Responsibilities

  • Occasionally supervise the work of junior / intermediate designers, offering technical direction and mentorship.
  • Assist in proposal and estimation activities related to mechanical design, including labor hour estimates and project scopes.
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and ethical standards, ensuring compliance with the ALTEN Canada Code of Business Conduct.
  • Must-Have Qualifications

    Education :

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, or a related field.
  • Licenced Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
  • Experience :

  • Minimum of 15 years of mechanical design experience, ideally within highly regulated industries such as nuclear, oil and gas, or aerospace.
  • Extensive experience using SolidWorks for 3D design, modeling, and creating detailed engineering drawings.
  • Proficient in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for structural simulations, optimization, and validation of mechanical systems.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in Ontario with the ability to sign and seal engineering documents.
  • Technical Skills :

  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical systems design, including electromechanical integration (servo motors, pneumatic / hydraulic cylinders, gearboxes).
  • Expertise in evaluating material strength, structural integrity, and design for various operating conditions (pressure, temperature, radiation, seismic, etc.).
  • Familiarity with the design and analysis of systems compliant with CSA, ASME, and other relevant nuclear and mechanical codes.
  • Nice-to-Have Qualifications

  • 15+ years of mechanical design experience, with a proven track record in the nuclear industry.
  • Experience with pneumatics, hydraulic systems, servo motors, and similar components commonly used in industrial automation and nuclear applications.
  • Soft Skills

  • Strong technical communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and solution-focused approach to problem-solving.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
