Reporting into the Director, External Communications, the External Communications Manager will support developing and executing comprehensive communication strategies that drive brand visibility, awareness, and thought leadership for Securian Canada. The ideal candidate will possess a strong writing background, with the ability to create compelling content across a variety of channels, and will work closely with the Director and collaborate with Managers and other junior-level resources across the Marketing & Communications team to ensure alignment with our messaging, brand guidelines, and overall marketing / communications strategy.

What you will do

Content creation, stakeholder engagement and strategy support

  • Develop high-quality content that aligns with the company’s strategic objectives, including press releases, social media content, research reports, speeches, articles, web copy, and various other internal / external communications.
  • Support the Director in developing integrated marketing / communications strategies and messaging for customer-facing and client communications throughout the customer journey.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and various external partners / stakeholders to create content for proposals, case studies, whitepapers, and other collateral that supports business development and sales enablement.
  • Assist in executing content strategies across multiple platforms (social media, websites, articles, etc.), ensuring consistency in messaging and brand tone.
  • Support with development and executive of social impact strategy and reporting.

Managing content workflow and team coordination

  • Support the Director by ensuring that deadlines, content quality, and strategic alignment are met while also guiding and mentoring junior writers and aligning with other team members across Marketing & Communications.
  • Review and edit content produced by junior team members and external partners to ensure it aligns with brand guidelines, brand voice and tone, and ensure that it meets the company’s high standards for quality.
  • Facilitate communication between the director and junior team members to ensure clarity and alignment in project goals, timelines, and expectations.
  • Brand messaging and reputation management

  • Ensure consistency in messaging across all marketing and communications materials, ensuring alignment with the company’s brand, values, and tone of voice.
  • Support the Director in the development of thought leadership content (e.g., reports, articles, social media posts) that enhances the company’s reputation and visibility.
  • Help manage external communications by assisting with the development and implementation of the crisis communications plan and supporting with ongoing issues management.
  • Metrics reporting and analysis

  • Monitor and report on media coverage including sentiment analysis and trends, providing feedback and recommendations to the Director for potential adjustments in strategy.
  • Collaborate with marketing and communications team on metrics reporting and analysis to gauge ongoing progress against team objectives.
  • What you will bring

  • Proven writing experience : a strong portfolio of written content across various channels (website, social media, speeches, etc.).
  • Experience managing content : proven ability to manage content production and workflow, with experience in leading or mentoring other team members.
  • Excellent communication skills : ability to communicate effectively with senior leaders and junior team members, providing clear feedback and direction.
  • Strong organizational skills : capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented : meticulous in ensuring content is accurate, brand-compliant, and aligned with company goals.
  • Team player : ability to work collaboratively within a dynamic team and across departments.
  • Preferred qualifications :

  • Experience in marketing communications in a corporate or agency environment, particularly within the financial services or insurance industry.
  • Familiarity with crisis communications and managing media inquiries.
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS) and project management tools.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or related field.
