Job description

The Mullings Group Search Canada is in search of a Director of Tax to join a private family office investment enterprise based in Victoria, BC.

Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, the Director of Tax will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of tax planning, compliance, and reporting for the Company. The position requires extensive familiarity with Canadian tax laws and regulations, along with the ability to formulate and execute tax strategies that harmonize with organizational goals and objectives. The ideal candidate will participate in all business decisions impacting income tax reorganizations, investment decisions, and audit activities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute tax strategies, identifying areas for tax efficiencies and make recommendations that are compliant with tax laws and regulations.
  • Provide strategic tax advice on acquisitions, divestitures, and other investment opportunities.
  • Provide tax support to legal, investment and family enterprise teams on personal, corporate and commercial matters, contracts with third parties, portfolio investments, purchase / sale of real property and other assets, donations, and investment structures as well as other requests that arise.
  • Take a lead role in managing the tax compliance and tax authority audits for our entities.
  • Oversee the preparation of tax provisions and disclosures in financial statements in accordance with relevant accounting standards.
  • Manage relationships with external tax advisors, auditors, and tax authorities.
  • Identify and manage tax risks associated with the company’s operations and investments.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all applicable tax laws and regulations.
  • Produce memos, letters, emails, correspondence, and reports tailored to the audience, effectively communicating in technical, business, and plain language as necessary.
  • Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations and assess their impact on the organization, providing strategic guidance to senior management.

Qualifications

  • CPA designation.
  • Completion of CPA In-depth Tax Course, Masters of Tax or similar.
  • Extensive corporate tax experience in a firm, or in industry, with a multinational corporate group.
  • 8+ years of professional experience (principally in the areas of tax).
  • Experience working in a family office is preferred.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing tax strategies that drive business results and minimize tax liability.
  • A key strategic and operational contributor at the senior management level.
  • Strong technical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to “get into the weeds” on technical issues and develop a deep understanding of the company’s tax positions.
  • Strong business ethics and integrity with a value-based approach to business and relationship building.
  • Ability to work effectively within an organization and influence decisions where appropriate.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects in a dynamic environment to drive results.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present tax strategies and issues to senior management and external stakeholders.
  • Service-oriented, pro-active, self-starter with an excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing Executive, board and business needs.
  • Humility and understanding of how to work effectively in a family-owned private company.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel.
