Located in Barrie (in person work) and reporting to the Director, Clinics and Placements, the incumbent works in the Oral Health Clinic supporting the Denturism, Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs. They support the student development of pre-taught curriculum-based skills and procedures in infection control, radiographic techniques, quality assurance processes, evidence based decision making, and critical thinking by role modelling, providing feedback to faculty and reinforcing expectations. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for the set up, and maintenance of equipment and facilities, and supports the inventory of supplies. Specific duties include, but are not limited to :

  • Supporting denturism, dental assisting, and dental hygiene students in the development of skills during rotations in radiography, instrument reprocessing, and inventory management as well as equipment set up, use and routine maintenance on the clinic floor
  • Organizing equipment and materials that will be used in teaching demonstrations
  • Demonstrating, modelling and over-seeing the safe operation of equipment ensuring proper safety procedures are being followed and communicating unsafe practices immediately to faculty
  • Supporting quality assurance programs related to Infection Control, Radiation Protection, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), and Health and Safety
  • Troubleshooting equipment which includes performing minor repairs or coordinating external servicing
  • Coordinating and conducting regular preventative maintenance of equipment
  • Providing new equipment orientation to students and staff
  • Performing inventory control duties such as tracking student equipment loans, supplies, maintaining emergency first aid kits, and organizing and stocking clinic / labs
  • Ensuring compliance with Healing Arts Radiation Protection (HARP) regulations
  • Assisting the program team with client recruitment and clinic promotion activities
  • Maintaining current SDS for all clinic and lab areas

Qualifications :

  • Successfully completed an accredited one-year postsecondary certificate program as a Level 2 Dental Assistant
  • Current certification with the Ontario Dental Assistants Association (ODAA) as a Level II Dental Assistant
  • Certifications in First Aid, Automated External Defibrillation (AED), and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Level C (CPR) (or required at the start of employment)
  • Minimum three years of current practical experience in a dental practice as a chair side dental assistant performing to full scope of the profession
  • Computer skills and experience using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel) to track and maintain information
  • Demonstrated experience with a dental records management program
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, customer service and communication skills (written and oral) to effectively communicate with clients / students, and assist in the recruitment of clients for the clinic
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Organizational and time management skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize and respond to multiple and often conflicting demands
  • Experience supporting an educational program is an asset
  • Training in Health and Safety or Privacy would be considered assets
