Position Summary :
The Finance Director for Canada is a key leadership role responsible for providing strategic oversight of the finance function in Canada while managing the global budgeting process. This role requires hands-on involvement to ensure financial accountability, uphold grant compliance, and foster trust with stakeholders. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a thorough understanding of Canadian financial regulations, strong attention to detail, and a dedication to leveraging their expertise to further our mission.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Financial Management :
- Provide comprehensive oversight of the organization’s financial operations within Canada, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and compliance with both federal and provincial regulations that govern registered charities.
- Fulfill specific fiduciary duties and obligations to ensure the charity operates in compliance with the charities’ law and acts in the best interests of its mission.
- Provide daily oversight of the Canadian finance and gift processing staff to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and accountability.
- Partner with the U.S. Finance Director to align financial processes globally and ensure cohesive policies and strategies.
- Work collaboratively with the CFIO, the Global Executive Team, stakeholders, and other departments to ensure organizational goals are met.
- Identify and address gaps in financial policies, procedures, and practices.
- Improve financial systems and workflows for better oversight and efficiency.
- Support shifts in responsibilities from contracted financial services to internal systems as appropriate.
- Global Budget Oversight :
- Coordinate the development of global budgets in collaboration with regional teams and the CFIO, ensuring alignment with strategic initiatives.
- Train staff on the budgeting process.
- Conduct year-round monitoring of budget variances and communicate findings promptly.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings and ensure financial discipline.
- Financial Reporting & Compliance :
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for the charity sector.
- Lead the preparation and submission of the T3010 Annual Information Return and ensure compliance with all CRA filing and reporting requirements.
- Ensure the charity complies with all federal, provincial, and municipal tax laws and regulations, including proper documentation and reporting of donations and receipts.
- Grant Compliance and Funding :
- Ensure strong grant compliance on the financial side to safeguard funding and maintain donor confidence and positioning the organization as a trusted grant recipient.
- Collaborate with teams to optimize grant reporting and support funding growth.
- Risk Management & Internal Controls :
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard the charity’s assets and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data.
- Implement and monitor financial policies and procedures related to budgeting, payroll, spending, financial reporting, and auditing.
- Identify potential financial risks, including those related to revenue generation, spending, and investments, and develop strategies to mitigate them.
- Audit & Financial Planning :
- Coordinate with external auditors for the annual audit process and ensure timely submission of audited financial statements.
- Implement recommendations from auditors to enhance financial transparency, internal controls, and operational efficiency.
- Provide financial analysis and advice to senior leadership, enabling informed decision-making for the charity’s strategic planning.
- Other Duties as Assigned :
- Support the CFIO in financial analyses, various reporting and projects.

Bachelor's degree in accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.At least 10 years of progressive experience in financial management, including roles in budgeting, financial analysis, and reporting.Proven experience in financial leadership within a multi-country and / or nonprofit or charity sector environment.Preferred :A master's degree (e.g., MBA) or professional certification such as CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) or CMA (Certified Management Accountant).Experience working with Canadian charity laws and CRA regulations.Experience with Sage accounting software.KEY COMPETENCIES :
