Job Summary

The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the organization's consistent achievement of its mission, organizational objectives and financial targets. The ED's major mandate is to ensure that the organization has a long-range strategy geared at meeting its goals. Key responsibilities include program development and administrative oversight, maintaining efficient and effective operations within budget and setting people priorities including staff and talent recruitment and retention. The ED will also provide financial leadership by managing budgets and monitoring long-term strategic fiscal planning. The ED is responsible for representing the organization in public forums and is responsible for political advocacy where government relations and funding potential are concerned.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in developing programs and organizational and financial plans with the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and carry out plans and policies authorized by the Board of Directors.
  • Develop a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization in consultation with ELT.
  • Lead, coach and support a team of direct reports who are functional specialists, including the Clinical Director.
  • Communicate with the ELT on internal and external issues that affect the organization.
  • Manage the efficiency and effectiveness of the daily operations of the organization with a keen focus on achieving financial targets.
  • Develop an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of the organization.
  • Ensure a healthy work environment in accordance with all appropriate regulations and legislations.
  • Represent the point of view of the organization to agencies, organizations, and the general public.
  • Maintain official records and documents, while ensuring compliance with federal and provincial regulations.
  • Work with the staff and ELT in preparing a budget; see that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
  • Administer the funds of the organization in accordance to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of the organization.
  • Approve expenditures within the authority delegated by the Board.
  • Determine staffing requirements for organizational management and program delivery.
  • Implement the performance management process developed by HR for all staff which includes monitoring the performance of staff on an ongoing basis and conducting an annual performance review.
  • Bring disciplinary action against staff when necessary using tact and appropriate techniques.
  • Terminate staff when necessary using legally defensible procedures.
  • Monitor departmental performance against goals to ensure that progress is being made, and that corrective action is taken if necessary.
  • Monitor legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to company operations.
  • Draft policies and procedures.
  • Review existing policies and procedures regularly and make recommendations to the Board of Directors on potential areas of change or growth.
  • Promote healthy, effective working relationships of all members of the EHN team.
  • Other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Masters degree or greater in a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in a healthcare facility with a leadership position.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in addiction and mental health.

  • Effective leadership skills, with a strong focus on mentoring and motivating an employee base of professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage key constituent relationships.
  • Able to identify key issues; creatively and strategically overcome internal and external challenges or obstacles.
  • A clear and solid understanding of the issues faced by the organization.
  • Strong knowledge of fiscal management and responsibility.
  • Knowledge of personnel policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
  • Experience creating and managing budgets for a large, distributed organization.
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
