Position Summary
BCIT’s Administrative Services-Facilities department is seeking three (3) regular, full time (1.0 FTE) Carpenters. This position carries out planned and emergency maintenance, repair and installation of architectural, structural building systems, installation, and repair services for filing cabinets, furniture locks, and furniture.
Duties & Responsibilities DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Responding to trouble calls, and taking corrective action; this includes troubleshooting problems on a wide variety of systems.
The problems are sometimes difficult to identify, solutions are not standard, and many are emergency calls. Priorities are established by assessing the impact on property and public safety.
- Establishing priorities and requirements for the Preventative Maintenance (PM) Plan, including items that need to be inspected and maintained for regulatory reasons.
- Conducting preventative maintenance on multiple systems which are interconnected, as per the PM Plan; duties include printing off daily schedule, inspecting, identifying deficiencies and taking corrective action.
- Estimating labour and materials for renovations, upgrades and projects, including reviewing project drawings, sketches, and specifications and making recommendations for improvements.
- Communicating with individuals from a variety of departments within BCIT, and external contractors brought in to work on systems, including working with difficult or upset clients, describing problems and explaining the interrelation of complex systems.
- Continually learning about advances in system and equipment design, advancing technology through communicating with local suppliers, on-the-job training, adapting older systems to work with new components and parts.
- Staying current on new technology and regulatory requirements including changes to standards and codes related to the profession.
- Adhering to and promoting safety standards required by regulatory bodies consistent with the assigned work.
- Upgrading existing systems to more modern and efficient options.
- Preparing drawing, sketches, layout diagrams, and estimates for internal projects and work required.
- Maintaining an inventory of carpentry supplies.
- Coordinating and monitoring the work of contractors to ensure adherence to established standards.
- Preparing work orders and purchase requisitions; maintaining records of work performed and completing work control forms.
- Estimating labour and materials for renovations, upgrades and projects, including pricing out materials from various vendors.
- Making recommendations and suggestions for improvement to Program Coordinators on various building projects on campus
- Setting-up and maintaining woodworking machinery.
- Installing ceiling tiles, suspended ceilings, wall coverings, resilient flooring, baseboards, doors, door hardware, cabinets, counters, blackboards, corkboards, whiteboards, and a variety of other fixtures and fittings.
- Repairing filing cabinets, furniture locks, which includes key duplicating, identification of lock types, picking
- Providing preventative maintenance and repairs to floors, doors, windows, ceilings, walls, steps, handrails, furniture in the Facilities Management shop, classrooms, labs, theatres, etc.
furniture, millwork, windows, sashes, door fittings and hardware, theatre seats, gym bleachers, and other structures
- Constructing, removing, and relocating walls and doors, including drywall and paneling. This includes dismantling existing structure and salvaging materials.
- Constructing millwork, cabinets and counters, and fabricating security arrangements for workrooms and equipment, disposing of furniture that is beyond repair
- Undertaking duties as assigned consistent with the job grade of this position.
Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS :
Definition : The qualifications section was developed using the approved job evaluation plan between the BCGEU and BCIT.
The qualifications represent the minimum qualifications required in the future and do not reflect the incumbent’s existing qualifications.
A valid Trades Qualification or an Interprovincial Trades Ticket (Journey person status) plus technical education and / or certifications in the relevant building trades industry;
plus two (2) years general trades experience plus up to four (4) years current relevant experience in the building trades industry.
- Ability to assess blueprints and make recommendations for specific trade requirements is an asset.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Proven ability to trouble shoot and resolve related issues in conjunction with the assigned level of skill, ability and education.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required to maintain top quality customer service standards.
- Willingness to maintain currency in the field and learn on the job is essential.
- Basic computer training and experience is required.
Please note : These are the minimum required qualifications. The department is hiring for three (3) vacancies with the following schedules :
Option #1 Monday Friday from 07 : 00 to 14 : 30
Option #2 Monday Friday from 12 : 00 to 19 : 30
