Reporting to the Director, Mental Health, the Nurse Practitioner will provide primary care, consultative services and care planning for patients with a mental health or addiction diagnosis. Through clinical consultation, staff education and research, the Nurse Practitioner will promote best practices in mental health and addiction care for inpatients and outpatients. The Nurse Practitioner will demonstrate leadership in evidence based practice, participate in quality improvement and act as a mentor to nurses and other interprofessional colleagues.
The Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class with the College of Nurses of Ontario, who provides comprehensive advanced practice nursing services including health promotion, disease and injury prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and support for adult patients under the care of the Mental Health and addiction Program. The Nurse Practitioner has advanced knowledge and decision-making skills, in providing a comprehensive health focused approach in meeting the primary health care needs of this group of patients.
The Nurse Practitioner provides patient care in accordance with legislative acts and frameworks guiding Nurse Practitioner practice including those from the hospital guidelines, policies and medical directives, College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), the Regulated Health Professionals Act, 1991 (RHPA), the Public Hospitals Act, 1990 (PHA), the Nursing Act, 1991, established medical directives, and professional practice standards. Within the scope of these acts and frameworks, the Nurse Practitioner will demonstrate competency to autonomously diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals and perform procedures as appropriate.
