Job description

Unit Summary

The McMaster Children's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has 47 tertiary and 14 intermediate care beds and an annual admission rate of 1,200 infants. The Unit is the regional referral centre for South Central Ontario. The program includes in-house high-risk deliveries, a dedicated neonatal transport team to support out-born mothers and / or infants and comprehensive care for L3, L2 and L1 premature and term infants.

Position Summary

The Advanced Practice Nurse - Neonatal is part of a dynamic leadership care team that includes Neonatologist and Neonatal Fellows. This triad works seamlessly with an extended health professional multi-disciplinary team to diagnose and treat all disorders affecting critically ill and convalescing newborns. Beyond the primary care duties of the ACNP are leadership responsibilities related to clinical teaching of medical residents, nurses and other key health care professionals and learners. In addition to clinical time the position includes protected professional time to pursue advancements in neonatal care. Ongoing academic pursuits are available through existing key relationships between McMaster Children's Hospital and the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University. Comprised of twenty (20) highly motivated and self-directed Acute Care Nurse Practitioners , the APN - Neonatal will join one of the largest groups of ACNP in any one unit in Canada. With over two decades of service, the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Neonatal team was recently recognized for their innovation and care with the Hospital's distinguished Cornerstone of Care Award.

Qualifications

1. Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class-Pediatrics [RN(EC)-Ped]

2. Advanced preparation at the Masters level with specialized training and successful completion of an internship in the NICU

3. Completion of a graduate level Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program

4. Current NRP Certification

5. Current BCLS Certification

6. Minimum 2 years experience in an NICU

7. Advanced knowledge of pre-term and full-term infant pathophysiology

8. Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professionals Act

9. Knowledge of family dynamics as it relates to role change with respect to the birth process crisis / stress situation and death and dying

10. Knowledge and skill to operate the highly specialized pieces of equipment in the NICU and the ability to trouble shoot and respond appropriately when problems arise

11. Critical analysis and problem-solving skills to formulate medical and nursing diagnosis
