The Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Contractually Limited Term Appointment (CLTA) in the field of Computer Science.

The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream for a three-year term with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025.

Applicants must have earned a Masters degree in Computer Science or a related field, with a minimum of two semesters of teaching in a degree-granting program / post-secondary institution, by the time of appointment.

A PhD in computer science or a related field is strongly preferred. We seek applicants whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths .

Applicants must have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level in a degree-granting program, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of course material / lectures.

Additionally, applicants must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.

  • Preference will be given to applicants with the following experience : coordination of large courses with multiple lecture sections, instructors, and teaching assistants;
  • past teaching or post-secondary education in artificial intelligence, computer systems, web programming, theory of computation, database systems, and software engineering;
  • student engagement activities, such as running seminars, contests, workshops, and student-run initiatives; contributions to departmental administration, such as course coordination and managing TAs;

supervision of undergraduate or graduate research projects.

  • Applicants must have a record of active professional development and teaching innovation, which may include (but is not limited to) participation in pedagogical training, courses and conferences, writing books or Computer Science Education publications;
  • developing novel curricula, pedagogical, or co-curricular techniques; leading outreach or equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) initiatives;

developing and sharing teaching-related tools. Additional administrative, organizational, and mentoring experience will be weighted favourably, with an emphasis on skills required to coordinate large courses with multiple lecture sections, instructors, and teaching assistants, and the background and communication skills necessary to work collaboratively with members of the department.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, and the full teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below) as well as strong letters of reference.

Responsibilities of the successful applicant will include undergraduate teaching, managing teaching assistants, creation of course materials, curriculum development, and service to the department.

At least two reference letters should address the applicant’s excellence in teaching and at least one reference letter should address the applicant’s excellence in computer science.

Three reference letters must be received for an application to be considered.
