Job description

The Assistant Vice-President, Pricing will support the pricing and product profitability management of all blocks of business within Securian Canada including Creditor, Affinity & Associations (A&A), Individual and Specialty insurance. This includes product portfolios for both the Life and General company, with a focus on extended health care solutions (Health and Dental insurance plans) and the A&A business. You will also support entry into new markets and products as appropriate.

Reporting to the VP, Product & Pricing, you will collaborate closely with Product and Pricing teams, as well as Actuarial and Finance, to ensure proper financial management in product pricing.

What you will do

  • Be responsible for profitable pricing of life insurance products in accordance with the company standards and policies ensuring that appropriate discussions and signoffs are obtained as required;
  • Manage and monitor a suite of health and life insurance products, including pricing reviews as agreed with Actuarial;
  • Report regularly on product performance against approved risk tolerances and profitability requirements;
  • Provide direction and support on financial underwriting for new and existing partnerships;
  • Develop and regularly review appropriate products metrics including the connections between pricing and capital, in conjunction with Finance and Actuarial;
  • Define parameters of risk and profitability and make recommendations for product design and features to balance client needs, market requirements and profitability, and support assessment of product initiatives, including new products, new distribution channels and change to existing products and distribution channels, against approved risk tolerances and profitability requirements;
  • Build and strengthen close connections with finance and non-finance business partners to provide a broad financial business view, support initiatives, and share skills and information;
  • Provide thought leadership and functional expertise to internal / external stakeholders;
  • Maintain ongoing and regular dialogue with industry actuaries and consultants - stay on top of emerging trends and experience in product pricing;
  • Liaise with external partners including brokers, distributers, Third-Party Administrators (TPAs) and reinsurers;
  • Lead pricing workstreams for new business and existing business initiatives;
  • Assist with contract and treaty negotiations with clients;
  • Be responsible to enforce pricing review for existing business and to ensure the block of business continues to meet our profitability standards;
  • Assist in responding to Requests for Proposals (RFPs), leading the pricing portion of the response;
  • Ensure pricing methodology aligns with IFRS 17 standard;
  • Assist Actuarial by providing pricing Axis models to be leveraged for reserving;
  • Develop expertise in new products and markets;
  • Assist with recruiting across Actuarial departments;
  • Promote risk management culture and ensure pricing methodology follows internal guidelines;
  • Co-Lead the Product and Pricing Working Group;
  • Maintain and update internal pricing guidelines.

What you will bring

The education. 10+ years’ experience covering a broad range of actuarial and financial functions including Pricing. Fellowship of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA) / Fellowship of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) required.

The experience. Strong pricing and product expertise in the Extended Health Insurance space (Health & Dental). Expertise in A&A and Group Benefits pricing would be also an asset and ideally will cover Health & Dental, Life and Disability benefits.

The skills. Ability to influence management decisions and collaborate well with different functions. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with acumen in both professional and business communications. Ability to conduct and facilitate discussions relating to both technical and non-technical topics. Experience with developing and maintaining relationships with external vendors. Ability to assess RFPs and negotiate contracts with partners.
