Job description

Energy Specialist Professional Exempt The Burnaby School District is on the traditional territory of the Coast Salish Nations of Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh and Squamish. The Burnaby School District is the fourth largest in BC. The District operates 41 elementary and 8 secondary schools, including a range of district and provincial resource programs. The District supports and provides learning to 25,000 Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-12) students and to more than 6,000 adult learners through our established Burnaby Community & Continuing Education program. With more than 100 languages spoken in the homes of its students, the District is one of the most culturally diverse in Canada. Reporting to the Energy & Sustainability Manager, the Energy Specialist functions as part of the Burnaby School District Energy Management & Sustainability Team and is involved with all aspects of energy efficiency, greenhouse gas accounting, and broader sustainability initiatives within the Burnaby School District. The Energy Specialist will assist the Energy & Sustainability Manager to achieve, promote, and coordinate energy saving initiatives, and will work closely with all Facilities Services Managers, school administrators, and District managers and administrators. An Energy Specialist in Burnaby : Tracks, analyzes, and reports utility consumption (electricity, natural gas, propane, and water / sewer); ensures these utilities are billed correctly, identifies any abnormalities, analyzes energy data and monitors energy performance, and communicates issues to involved parties; Acts as the administrator user of the District’s account on the Clean Government Reporting Tool (CGRT); collects and reports data on the District’s Scope 1 & 2 greenhouse gas emissions; Performs financial and statistical analysis on district buildings and infrastructure, identifying potential projects, developing business cases, and bringing forward projects to internal management for capital program support and funding approval; Ensures Facilities Team, including Director, Managers, and Operational staff, are fully aware of all conservation and energy management incentives and education programs offered by FortisBC; Works with Facilities Team to conduct periodic inventories of natural gas-fired equipment to determine eligible projects for FortisBC incentives, in coordination with the District’s Long-Range Facilities Plan and end of operational life replacements; Executes natural gas projects and ensures that FortisBC programs are applied for, utilized where applicable, and accurately tracked internally and externally; Assists the Energy & Sustainability Manager to : Implement, track, and monitor the District’s Sustainability Strategic Plan (SSP); Execute behavior change programming, promoting energy saving initiatives and GHG reduction by engaging with multiple stakeholders, including school administrators, teachers, students, and the Facilities Team; Prepare the annual Climate Change Accountability Report (CCAR); Prepare quarterly reports to BC Hydro and FortisBC; Develop, implement, track, monitor, and update the Strategic Energy Management Plan (SEMP) and SEMP targets; Monitor and track EV charging station usage, low carbon fuel standard credits, and repairs. Performs other duties as required. Qualifications / Experience : A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to one of the following : Certificate or Masters in energy management, Masters in sustainability and planning, or proof of passing the Certified Energy Manager exam under the Canadian Institute for Energy Training; 3-5 years experience working in the sustainability and / or energy fields; Demonstrated knowledge and experience with energy efficient technologies related to lighting systems, HVAC systems, cooling plant equipment, heating plant equipment and control systems. Experience effectively managing simultaneous tasks and projects with a high degree of independence, professional judgement, and organizational skills; Knowledge and experience in project management, budget development, business case development, financial controls and analysis, and energy analysis; Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to ensure information is communicated appropriately; and Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, foster strong relationships, and build consensus with various stakeholders and teams.
