Halifax Public Libraries invites INTERNAL and EXTERNAL applications for the part-time, term   Adult Specialist  position at Woodlawn Public Library . This is the result of a job share.

This is a unionized position. Preference will be given to internal NSUPE Local 14 employees.

ABOUT THE BRANCH

Woodlawn Public Library is a large suburban branch that offers a wide variety of diverse programs and services to the customers of all ages. It is located next to many retail outlets, and also a lake trail, so is in the hub of the community. A former movie theatre, it features high ceilings and one remaining program room that is still a popular spot for movies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

As an Adult Specialist at Halifax Public Libraries, you will :

  • Plan, deliver and evaluate adult programs and events – for the branch, district, and / or region
  • Provide facilitation in adult programs and meetings
  • Facilitate diverse social, recreational and learning experiences
  • Work to actively engage adults in the library in formal and informal ways
  • Build relationships and maintain community partnerships
  • Participate in hiring public service staff
  • Participate in hiring, training and supporting staff in adult programming and public service
  • Recruit, hire, train and oversee volunteers and grant-funded staff
  • Support regional projects and initiatives; participates on regional teams
  • Act as a resource in the area of adult programming and services
  • Act as Person in Charge in library branch(es)
  • Display, promote, and perform work duties in a positive and safe way and displays safety awareness at all times.
  • Support and show leadership by working to health and safety standards, following health and safety policies and procedures and encouraging colleagues to work to the same standards by reporting incidents, hazardous conditions and improvement possibilities.

Education and Experience :

  • Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) years of related experience
  • Two (2) years of Post-Secondary and four (4) years of related experience
  • Completion of Grade Twelve (12) or equivalent and six (6) years of related experience
  • Additional requirements :

  • Read and write English
  • Excellent communication, conflict resolution and customer service skills
  • Demonstrated ability to provide instruction and training
  • Experience in program planning and delivery for adults
  • Knowledge of media and resources of interest to adults
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills including : Functions of a web browserMicrosoft Office applications Social media applications
  • Intermediate technology skills including : Willingness to learn and experiment with additional tools and technologiesWillingness to support others in learning technical skills and concepts
  • Assets :

  • Fluency in a second language
  • Awareness of community resources available to adults
  • Experience working with diverse communities
  • Certificate in Adult Education or post-secondary education in a human services field (e.g. literacy, social work, counseling, community health)
  • TRAVEL

    The position requires occasional travel between our various library branches and community sites within the Halifax Regional Municipality.
